Smiley found his forever home on July 15!

Smiley (a.k.a. Dude) likes to start his day by being taken outside around 7:00 a.m. He does his business and is fed breakfast. He is allowed to roam for an hour or so, then he is crated for at least an hour and a half while we're at swim practice. When we return, Smiley is left out of his crate for the day and generally plays outside in our fenced yard, or naps or chills out in the house with a toy. He is fed dinner around 5:30 p.m., usually followed by an evening walk, and is taken out for the last time around 11:00 p.m. He sleeps well in his crate in a bedroom.

Smiley is great with our four children. He also does well with other children and people he's met in the neighborhood and at our home including all visitors to the house. He loves to meet new people. He is a charmer and intrigues people with his giant head, paws and tail and long, slender body.  He is excellent with children and loves playing with and getting pets from our children (ages 7-11) and their friends. We have not observed any nipping, but he does sometimes jump up on them with excitement. We are working on this behavior. Smiley is a true Louisiana love hound and just wants pets, snuggles and to be near his people.

He likes two short walk per day and is a medium energy dog. He is learning to play fetch and likes being outdoors. He seems new to a leash and will cross in front of or behind you, making it hard to walk, but is learning quickly.

Smiley does well with our resident senior dog, who is a bit smaller than him. She lets him know when he's being too juvenile (putting his paws on her head/face/rump, getting too close, or trying to get her to play) and he responds appropriately. Because of the fact that he seems to want to play, we think he would do well with a younger, more playful dog. He could still do well with an older or less playful dog, but a slow introduction and clear boundaries would help him learn. He loves to compete for pets and snuggles.

Smiley has not been exposed to cats. He does occasionally try to chase squirrels or bunnies in our yard or on walks.

He does well when left alone in his crate at night and for a few hours during the day. He could possibly free roam while we're out, but we haven't tried this yet. Smiley doesn't generally chew things he shouldn't, but has chewed the stuffing out of a few dog toys and a dog bed.

Smiley can be scared and timid the first few days in our house but has quickly warmed to us and is showing his fun, spunky, silly, wonderful self. He is easily redirected when he gets into something he shouldn't or is jumpy. He barks occasionally when other dogs walk past our yard but is otherwise not very vocal.

Smiley is being treated for Anaplasma with a round of antibiotics. He does not show any active signs of infection and is being treated as a precaution. Smiley had some conjunctivitis in his eyes so he has eye ointment for 10 days. The conjunctivitis is already resolving with ointment.

Smiley is perfectly proportioned; big enough to be easily detected underfoot and go on good walks, but too short for counter-surfing or other shenanigans. He is the sweetest boy and could do well in a home with or without children. We think he could do equally well in an apartment or a home with a yard.
