Updates
PUPDATE 3
Skye loves everything about the sunshine and outside. Equally happy laying on the deck, soaking up the sun, splashing in the pool and sniffing around the yard, being outside is definitely her happy place.
Skye has made significant progress with potty training. She occasionally will still have an accident but her potty signals are pretty obvious and we have started training her to the bells on the door to let us know when she has to go out. She also does great in the crate now with the bark collar for support.
I would encourage anyone looking for a fun, active pup to reach out to meet Skye. She is deaf but she doesn't know she is any different than any of the other pups in our home. She certainly doesn't let it hold her back so neither should you!
PUPDATE 2
Skye has continued to do well in her foster home. She is loving the adventures out that summer has brought. She enjoyed a camp out for beer festival tickets, trips to home depot and various pet stores and a pup friendly restaurant. Of course, she makes 100 friends wherever we go. She isn't the least bit shy and veers towards people as we approach. She can get a little too excited and will jump up so we are working on sitting nicely for pets. She would love a family that would take her out to patios so others can enjoy her social nature.
Her training is going great. We have been using her meal times to work on her training and she is very engaged and loves to work. We have also added signs for down, wait, okay (release command), potty, off and using the vibrate on the e-collar to get eye contact.
She does have a little separation anxiety and will fuss a bit at the baby gate when we leave the room so we have been working on helping her realize the people will always come back with training around this. She really seems to be catching on. We have also introduced a bark collar when she is in the crate and that has been very helpful in correcting the frustration/anxious barking she was demonstrating. She has also improved greatly with potty training and only has accidents occasionally.
Skye has made amazing progress with us and she has been a super fun pup to have in our home. She loves to be outside and is a sweet and playful girl. She is hopeful that her forever family will scoop her up soon so they can have lots of summer adventures together!
PUPDATE 1
Meet Skye! This sweet girl's striking beauty is matched by her sense of adventure and snuggly nature.
Skye is a very typical, 3 month old puppy. She spends her days practicing crate training, playing with her foster siblings and emptying out the toy box. She loves meal times but eats slowly so her bowl is often a target of the other puppies. She plays hard with the other dogs but loves to snuggle with the humans and other pups as the evening winds down.
One noteworthy thing about Skye is that she is deaf. We are working on training with hand signals and she is picking up quickly! She knows sign commands for "sit", "no", "yes/good girl", "off" and "come". We have also been introducing a vibration collar to help get her attention when she isn't looking at you. Since she is deaf, she can't hear herself when she barks and she has a very loud bark. One positive thing about her hearing impairment is that since she can't hear things, she doesn't bark much and she is a very sound sleeper. She will bark when initially crated and when playing. She also may bark and scratch at the door initially if she is left in a room by herself. Adopters should be prepared to work with different training methods (e-collar, hand signals, etc.) to help her learn basic obedience and to keep her safe.
Skye is a pretty friendly girl and is very excited to go up to people to say hello, especially if they have treats. Skye doesn't live with any children but she will probably need some more training before she could have any freedom with smaller kids. She gets excited and will jump up/can be mouthy. Since she can't hear, it's hard to redirect unless you are right there to intervene. She can be a mouthy girl still since she is busy growing teeth but has been improving with the "no" command and redirecting.
She currently has four other pups in her foster home: two adult dogs and two other puppies about her same age. She plays mostly with the other puppies and does play more roughly. Her play does require close supervision since she can't hear the other dogs’ vocal corrections (grumbles and growls). She really wants to be friends with the adult dogs but she can be a little bit annoying with them and needs some help remembering to give them some space when they would prefer she leave them alone. She matches well with the higher energy dogs that play rough. I would suggest continued supervised socialization with other dogs (daycare or play dates/groups) so she can get lots of practice being corrected by humans and other pups. She is very playful and loves other dogs and would do great with another pup in her forever home.
She also loves to play with our cat. She is quite overzealous and pouncy with the kitty in her attempts to play with her. She would need lots of supervision and boundary setting to be trusted around a kitty.
Skye gets most of her energy out playing with the other pups in her home. She loves wrestling and playing chase in the yard. She is a medium-high energy girl that likes long naps after play time. We are practicing leash skills and she has done walks about 1 mile around our neighborhood. She does well on leash especially considering how young she is and how little practice she has had. She is ready to go and easily keeps moving. She does stop to sniff here and there but a quick leash tug or leash wiggle is enough to get her attention. She does well in the car (crated) after a little fussing to settle in and she would be a great pup to take on adventures to parks, hiking trails or outdoor patios.
Skye is crated when we leave, as she is still very much a puppy. She will chew on cords, shoes, scraps on the floor, etc. so will need to be closely monitored. She has been doing pretty well in her crate when left alone and at bedtime after an initial 5-10 minutes of very loud barking. A kong or chew given when crated helps her settle in. She is crated in 3-4 hour chunks and for 6-7 hours overnight without a potty break.
Skye is such a brave and confident girl! While those are both great things, they do create an additional challenge since she can't hear people calling to correct her if she is being a little TOO brave. Her perfect family will help her build a great training foundation so she can SAFELY adventure to her heart's content.
