Updates

River wakes up about 6 AM to go out and go potty and then eats breakfast. She goes out again after she eats. I still go out with her to reassure her and to make sure she goes potty. Sometimes she will spend more time exploring and forget to go. She plays with my resident 25-pound chi-terrier mix and plays respectfully with him. They often play chase around my kitchen island. She is a calm girl after her activity and lays around and sleeps or chews on toys. She likes a walk or a good play in the backyard. She was spayed right before arrival so her activity has been limited. She eats again at 6 pm and goes to bed about 11. She sleeps in a crate in our room and in usual German Shepherd Dog (GSD) fashion, voices her displeasure of the crate for a few minutes and then goes to sleep.

River is the MOST amazing dog! She loves everyone. She greets everyone and is calm. She can jump up but is learning “off.” She has shown no fear or aggression toward anyone or anything. She loves to explore new areas and see new things. She does well in a car but I clip her in the back seat. She wants to be a front seat passenger or a lap dog :)

River is fantastic with kids. She loves my 5-year-old grandson. She plays with him and snuggles with him. River is respectful with toys and takes all treats VERY gently. My grandson notes she loves belly rubs and a good neck scratch!

She is a medium energy dog but would definitely benefit from a fenced backyard. She needs room to run and a safe environment to do that in. She would not like a tie out. I tried to monitor her potty by putting her on a tie out and she was very resistant to it. I truly felt it brought back some bad memories. She did well on a leash but due to the weather we have only had a couple walks.

River is amazing with my dogs. They got along from day one! She is respectful of my 9-year-old Golden Retriever and does not play too rough with my 25-pound-dog. He can be cranky and she appreciates that. She is not a dominant dog but would also love to be in a home with another dog to help with her energy. She plays a lot with my dogs. If she is an only dog, you will need to be her playmate more often!

She has not interacted with cats while in my care but her previous foster noted “no cats.”

River is a puppy and occasionally has an accident in the house but it is always on the same rug so she is very close to being fully potty trained. She has no signal yet other than to go to the rug.

River has been crated 4 hours and I have a camera on her while I am gone. She is quiet and sleeps or chews on her toys. She needs a distraction toy when you leave or she barks. She can be vocal when you come home in true GSD fashion. She would not do well to be crated 8 hours without a break.

River is a German Shepherd and will need someone who understands the needs of a German Shepherd. They need a true commitment to training and they will be committed to you. She has a WONDERFUL personality and loves life! If we wanted a big dog, she would not be leaving this house. She is an amazing girl that needs the right family to be her forever family. She is a puppy, don’t be fooled by size. She will need patience and puppy understanding.
