PUDPATE 2
Panda has continued to do phenomenally in our home. With his laid back attitude and excellent bladder control, he has been one of the easiest foster pups we have had. We sometimes forget he is still so young since he is large and so well behaved.
He has started attending daycare at Dog Dog Daycare and is doing great there. He isn't the least bit worried about being left to play at drop off in the morning and has made lots of friends both human and canine. This morning he even pawed at the door to go inside, to let me know I wasn't moving quite fast enough for him.
He is a super smart guy and is picking up his training commands wonderfully. We do at least one meal a day as training practice where he earns his kibbles. He knows sit, down, yes marker, look, wait, ok (release command) and kennel. We have trained him with both verbal and sign commands. Most dogs (regardless of hearing capacity) learn better with visual cues. It is hard to determine to what extent Panda has hearing loss. He definitely can hear other dogs barking and traffic noises but slept through a series of different pitches of dog whistle sounds I played while he was sleeping. Most people probably wouldn't guess he may be hearing deficient, it just seems like it's harder to get his attention sometimes. In any case, he is an all around great pup and would love to find his forever family!
PUDATE 1
Meet Panda! This sweet dude recently made his way to Wisconsin from Texas and he is settling in well! He has a very calm demeanor and just goes with the flow for the most part. He has made a number of canine, feline and human friends and is gaining confidence daily. He loves his people and is a playful and affectionate guy. This handsome guy is ready to find his forever family to spoil him with snuggles every single day.
Panda is a very typical 4 month old puppy, with the exception of already being the size of a small horse. He is a large breed dog, so any adopter should expect him to get quite large (90+lbs) and should be able to accommodate the needs of a dog that size. He also may have some depreciated hearing. It seems he hears some things but not others. We have been training with hand signals and he already knows sit, down, look, wait, ok (release) and kennel. He is very food motivated and engaged in training.
Panda spends his days practicing crate training, playing and exploring outside, emptying out the toy box, playing chase with his foster siblings and taking long naps on the couch with his canine friends as the evening winds down. He is a very easy going pup and has quickly settled into the routine of our home.
Panda has done amazing with potty training. He hasn't had any accidents in the house in the week he has been here. He is figuring out crate training and will willingly go in the crate but will whine/bark in the crate for a bit initially. I have him crated in the same room with me while I work and he has been quiet up to four hours. He then gets a long break at lunch and is crated again for another four hours. We are working on having him crated further away from me while I work. Overnight he is crated across the bedroom from me and settles in very quickly. He sleeps through the night without breaks.
Panda has done well meeting people. He will readily approach and rarely jumps up. He has visited two different pet stores and was a Fetch Ambassador at the Harry Pawter event recently. He is unsure for a couple minutes as he figures out where he is and how it works but settles in quickly. He doesn't have kids in his foster home but he has met several and done well. He readily approached three neighbor girls (about 9 years) for pets when we were on a walk. He met a handful of kiddos at the Harry Pawter event and had a playdate with three dog saavy kids (ages 2-9). He walked up to them for pets and once in the yard he just did his own thing (finding cool spots in the dirt to lay) while they tried to get him to play. He was pretty relaxed with the kids there and didn't seem the least bit concerned. He seems to engage more with the people/kids if there are other dogs around. He is occasionally mouthy when excited so I would suggest supervision with really young kids until he learns those boundaries.
He currently has two adult dogs in his foster home. He was a little bit of an "annoying puppy" when he first came (paws and air chomps to engage play) but he has figured out the boundaries with our two dogs and they get along great. Our dogs can be a bit cranky so he likely wouldn't have any problems with more playful and receptive adult dogs.
Panda does have two kitties in his foster home. He likes the cats and wants to play but he is already pretty big so when he paws to play, the cats don't like it. He has been swatted several times by both cats. He hasn't been aggressive at all with the cats, just excited so he would need to be watched closely until they settle in together. He would do fine in a home with cats but as always, we suggest slow introductions to new animal friends as all cats and environments can be different.
Panda gets most of his energy out playing with toys, sniffing around the yard and playing with the other pups in his foster home. He is a medium energy dude that likes long naps after play time. He does pretty well on leash but will stop/slow down when he gets distracted (i.e. cranes in a field). Has walked with a pack and done well with the other dogs on leash. He does well in the car (crated) and settles in quickly for the ride.
Panda hasn't been too destructive in our home but he is already large enough to check out what is on the counter and still a curious puppy so we crate him when we leave. He will bark/whine a bit at first so he may not be a great fit for housing with shared walls but eventually settles in.
We have loved having this sweet, silly pup with us and know he will charm his forever family with his very sweet and endearing nature.
