Otis found his home January 31, 2021!

We get up around 7:00 am and Otis and my resident dog go outside for a potty break. Then he gets breakfast and if I go to work, he goes in the crate with a Kong treat and toys and naps the day away until I return in the evening. Then I let him out for a potty break and to play before coming inside to eat dinner. Then we play some more or go for a walk before resting for the night. If I am working from home or it’s a weekend, he tends to just nap on the couch or lay outside the door of the cat’s room hoping to sneak a peek. I let him out to go potty every so often and we’ll play outside in the snow or go on a walk during the day. He likes to chase after a ball but isn’t good about returning it.

For a husky, Otis is surprisingly chill. He can be playful and get the zoomies when running around in the backyard, but inside, he’s pretty low-key. He’ll sit outside the gate to the cat’s room or curl up for a nap on the couch next to me. He’s a fairly mellow dude. I take him on a 20-30 minute walk most days and he runs around in the fenced yard. But I think he’d do fine in an apartment or without a fenced yard if gets regular walks or can go to a dog park occasionally. He walks well on leash with minimal pulling and he also rides well in the car. He can be a little shy with new people and doesn’t jump on them when he first meets them like some excited dogs do. He warms up to new people pretty quickly if you’re gentle and go slowly with him. I have not seen him interact with kids.

Otis is also very treat motivated so I think training will be easy. He came to me knowing sit, shake, and down. Otis likes my resident dog, who is similar in age, size, and energy level to him. He likes running along the fence with the neighbor dog as well. He has not met other dogs with me but he seems to get along well with other dogs based on information from the shelter in Indiana.

Otis is very interested in my resident cat. They have had limited interactions between the gate or while Otis is in the crate or on leash. Based on how much he wants to get at my cat and how much he whines and lays outside the door of the room I keep the cat in, I think his prey drive may get the better of him so he would be best in a home without cats.

I keep Otis in the crate when I leave the house. He hasn’t shown any destructive tendencies, but since I haven’t had him long (one week), I err on the side of caution. He may get to the point where he can be left out after settling into his permanent home. He does tend to whine a bit when I first put him in the crate but settles down quickly. I can tell from the dog cam I have on him that he mostly just sleeps the day away.

Overall, Otis is a sweet, chill boy who is looking for his forever home.
