Updates

Meet Nix! She’s a happy and courteously curious 1 year old, with the style, heart and spirit of a Golden Retriever/Lab. She transitioned to Wisconsin without issue and brought with her a strong appetite for all the people, toys & snacks, and the great outdoors.

Nix would do well in an active family, where she’s not left alone day and night. She stays close to her people and is an excellent companion — for walks & hikes, yard work, couch time, house chores and computer-ing. She’s a quick learner and food motivated. She’s non-reactive to vacuums, having her paws wiped/held, and touching of her ears/mouth.

Since arriving a few weeks ago, most days for Nix have looked like…

5:30am: wake up! (Because of the other dog and humans in the house). A quiet and very relaxed crawl out of the kennel, a quick potty, breakfast and then she finds her toys.

6 - 7am: urban walk! 30-60 minutes/2-4 miles leaves her just enough energy to Zoom in the yard.

7 - 3pm: logs a full day of work from home, rotating between which desk she snoozes under. [insert 1-3 quick romps in the yard through the day]

3pm: urban walk! 30-60 minutes/2-4 miles (She tired quickly with the recent heat.)

5pm: dinner and the descent onto the couch

9pm: last potty & a dreamy frozen peanut butter & yogurt kong upon entry into her kennel

At night, Nix sleeps in a locked kennel on the main floor of the house, in the office. During the day, she’s happy to be gated in the office (with her kennel open) if she’s a little too playful while we’re working and when we leave the house. We’ve left her loose in the house for an hour or two at a stretch without issues.

Nix has spent time with kids, including ample time with a 9 year old. She’s guilty of excessive eye contact, affectionate licking, and snoozing aside or under.

Here’s where Nix has room for growth:

  • Reactivity to passersby (mostly in house/in the yard, becoming less reactive on leash walks). Now that the house windows are open, her reactivity has increased with the increased noise. This could mean she may not do well in an apartment. She responds to redirection.

  • Greeting people with four paws on the floor. When she meets new people (adults & kids) in the house, she’s initially gated in her office, where she waits quietly and calmly.

  • Resource guarding with other dogs. This ebbs and flows. She’s submissive to other dogs but doesn’t share toys well. She’s never been protective of her things towards a human – not even a glimpse of aggression.

  • Continued leash training. Overall, she’s improved significantly when walking on a leash. She can keep a nice pace and doesn’t pull wildly. We walk her with the Gentle Leader Head Halter for urban walks and a chest harness and long, retractable leash when hiking. She has not been to an off-leash park but shows strong recall when in the yard.
