PUPDATE 2
Naya has been with us for a little over 4 weeks now. She’s really settled into her routine here with us and we have really started to see her personality. She just hit her 2 week mark from her spay surgery and is now allowed to be move active. She has been enjoying playful wrestling sessions with our resident husky mix. She confidently walks all around the house, whereas when she arrived she was afraid of the hardwood floors in our kitchen and entry into the house from the garage. She still does not necessarily like being walked through those areas on a leash when it is not of her choosing. She is no longer afraid of the garbage bins that sit outside the house and has gained the confidence to jump up into the car instead of picked up and put in the car.
She has not had any accidents in the house since her first week with us. She spends most of the day free to roam the house as she pleases while I am working from home. She spends most of that time napping on the couch or on the bed behind me. She typically is crated at night for bed however over the weekend we did let her sleep out of the kennel and she chose to sleep all night in bed with us. She still is super affectionate and loves to cuddle. She definitely likes to be pet and does do the cute nose nudge if and when we stop petting her to remind us that we can keep doing it. She has also found her bark which she mostly reserves for the rare instances our doorbell gets rung. I can get her to stop by having her come by me and petting her or I put in her kennel with a blanket covering it while music plays in the room quietly.
Naya has mastered the “sit” command and has been practicing the “down”, “stay”, and “come” commands. She is very treat motivated and doesn’t mind her command practice session as long as there are rewards to be had. She is gentle and when children have been running around the home she has not chased them. She’s been gentle with small children and respectful of them. She lets them come to her but does not necessarily seek them out on her own for attention. She’ll walk behind them around the house to see where they are going and keep them company as they play. Naya really is just the sweetest.
PUPDATE 1
After Naya’s long trip up to Wisconsin from Texas, she was understandably nervous of her new environment. She spent the first day slowly exploring the new home and all its rooms. She found a spot she liked and relaxed there for a little while that first day. She has gained so much confidence since that first day here, though she still is not so sure about hardwood floors and likes to take her time when exploring them. She has been venturing further and further on them if she does it on her own time. She is extremely polite around people when they are eating whether they are inside sitting at the table for meals or outside in the grass eating a snack. She keeps a respectful distance and does not beg.
In general, she is quiet girl. We rarely hear her bark maybe, a few times here and there when outside or if she heard a strange noise while inside. She has gone on a few car rides and has done well. She hasn’t found the confidence to jump up into the tall SUV but will let you pick her up and place her in it. She did great on a recent trip to get ice cream and enjoyed a little pup cup herself.
Her favorite thing is to get affection from humans. Naya loves to be near you and to receive pets and cuddles. She enjoys when you massage her thighs and she will lift each leg as you are rubbing them. If you stop rubbing or petting her, she will sweetly nuzzle her face into your lap and remind you nicely that she enjoyed the attention.
When she meets new people out in the neighborhood and on walks, Naya likes to take the meet and greet slow. She doesn’t run up or jump or greet in a high energy way. But rather she takes her time wanting to make sure they are indeed good people. She had fun on the weekend when we went to play in the neighbors fenced in backyard. She enjoyed playing and running around with two other dogs in while four kids under the age of 3 played on the inflatable pool and on the swing set. She handles is very calm when around her 3 year old human housemate. The 3 year old walks up and talks to Naya and pets her head and she just stares at him. She doesn’t get in his face or lick him all over, she is very calm and respectful. Sometimes he will be sitting and playing on his own and she just walks up and sniffs him.
Naya is a low to medium energy dog. I would say she is mostly low energy because she seems perfectly content relaxing near people and in the house or hanging out in the yard. But she wouldn’t turn down a walk or a play session with another dog friend if she is offered. When in a fenced in space she will play fetch with a stick or a ball. Naya likes to chew on her benebone and has never touched or chewed any of the humans’ items or the kid toys or stuffed animals.
She arrived not knowing many commands but has been working on and doing well with the sit command. In the beginning of our first week we were still working on our communication and had two pee accidents occur on the carpet but later on on the week we have picked up on her cues for when she wants to go outside. She is crate trained and likes to relax in her crate sometimes too. She goes to bed around 9 pm and doesn’t wake up until we get up at 6 am. When she hears us rustling then she makes little cute noise saying hey, I want to come see you guys.
