Malcolm found his family February 9, 2021!

Malcolm wakes up early with us, eats breakfast, and goes for a short 15-minute walk. During the workday, Malcolm roams the house uncrated without issue. He spends most of his day lounging on the couch. After work, we take Malcolm for another walk and/or play chase in the backyard. His favorite activities are snuggling, being pet, and getting brushed. He eats dinner in the evening and will put himself to bed when he's tired by going into his kennel. He spends the night in his kennel.

He is a huge lover! He greets almost everyone "belly up," asking for pets. He will also whine to let them know if they are not paying enough attention to him.

Malcolm has met children 8+ in his foster home. When meeting children, he is just as loving and "pet seeking." The only issue Malcolm has had with children has been his size. He seems to be unaware of how large he is and has pushed into kids, almost knocking them down.

He is a very low energy dog; he would lay on the couch all day if we let him. Right now, he goes on two walks a day and loves them. He enjoys sniffing around and watching cars pass by. Before Malcolm came to us, he had never been on a leash, so we currently use two points of contact, though he has never really needed it. When he first started walking, he would never leave our side. Now that he is more comfortable going on walks, he does pull a little, but most of the walk, he is still walking next to us. Malcolm also likes to run around in the backyard, especially when he chases us, or we call him back and forth between the two of us.

Malcolm spent most of his life in a house with four other German Shepherds, so he has lots of experience being with big dogs. On walks, he loves saying “hi” and greeting other dogs. When being with other dogs for a longer duration, he does his own thing and does not seek out play. He will also request personal space from other dogs when he needs it.

So far, Malcolm has not encountered any cats in his foster home.

There is no dog I trust more at home alone than Malcolm! He spends most of the time sleeping on the couch, and never gets himself into trouble.

He is still figuring out how to walk up stairs in the home.  Malcolm has mastered five stairs so far and would do best in a place with little to no stairs.

Malcolm seems to have an interest, but also anxiety with engines, especially snowmobiles, snow blowers, and cars. With cars, he will stop and watch, or bark at them from the backyard. He becomes very anxious with the snow blower and will bark/whine almost the entire time it is on. In the past, he has tried to chase snowmobiles.

He is definitely the pickiest eater we have seen. Malcolm is quick to develop food aversion to anything he finds his medication in and will refuse to eat anymore of it. Right now, to get him to eat, we serve him his medications wrapped in deli meat, and serve him homemade food after he has finished his pills. He will eat dry dog food mixed with wet food on occasion.

Malcolm is being treated with antibiotics for Lyme disease and Anaplasma. He does not currently show any clinical signs and was treated as a precaution. Malcolm gets treats to help his joints/hips.

Current likes: getting pet/brushed, attention, snuggles, eating snow, going on walks, napping, beef liver treats/deli ham, watching out the window (he's very observant)

Though Malcolm has his quirks, he is the biggest sweetheart and will bring so much love to his future home. He is looking for a family that is willing to give that love back!
