For a puppy, Mabel is incredibly low maintenance. Mabel sleeps in her crate throughout the night and waits patiently for her humans to wake up in the morning. She gobbles down her breakfast, not even realizing that we sneak an antibiotic pill in with each meal. She then hangs out with the resident puppy for a few hours before she goes on a quick walk to her favorite patch of grass for her first potty break. The rest of the day is spent napping and wrestling with her furry companion. After her dinner, she goes on her second (and last) potty break for the day.
Mabel loves humans indiscriminately. She often tries to follow new humans she meets on walks. She loves hugs and pets and kisses!
In her first foster home before she came to Wisconsin, they noted that Mabel loves children.
Mabel is a medium energy puppy who goes on two short walks a day and plays with our high energy dog throughout the day. When Mabel is not rolling around with our puppy, she's snoozing. Mabel is mostly a homebody who is still learning how to walk politely on a leash - our walks have mostly been Mabel taking us to her favorite spots to relieve herself and then immediately pulling us back home.
This little girl loves our resident dog and takes behavioral cues from him. They rarely choose to be apart from each other. However, she is very timid around dogs she's not familiar with. When she encounters loud, barking dogs outside, she will try to run the opposite direction.
Mabel does well with our resident grumpy cat, Nutmeg. In the first two days, Mabel tried to play with our cat like she was a dog. This was not well received and after correcting Mabel twice, she's not done it again. Now Mabel knows she can sniff the cat but leave the rough housing for canine friends only.
She free roams the living room with the resident puppy and cat when the humans are working from home and doesn't get into any trouble. However, when we previously left Mabel by herself in the den with the door closed, no other pets, and humans gone for 15 minutes, she attempted to chew up the carpet. We've had no problem when she is crated, other than whining and occasional barks.
Mabel tested positive for Anaplasma, which just indicates antibodies to this bacteria, not necessarily an active infection. She's on a course of antibiotics for this and medicine for tapeworm, which is also a relatively mild and easy-to-treat parasite, but is otherwise a healthy, bouncy pup.
Mabel has been one of the best fosters we've had: amazingly well behaved and loving. She's timid at first, but once she warms up, she will quickly snuggle her way into your heart.
