Updates

Layla wakes up at 5:45 am and eats breakfast by 6:30. We go for a 1.25 mile walk around 7:30 am, and then she settles in for the day while I work from home. She naps or chews on chew toys, but her favorite activity is sitting by a door or window and watching what's going on outside. We go out at lunchtime for a potty break, and she usually has a snack after. Her afternoons are similar to the mornings. Around 5:00, Layla has dinner, and we go for a second walk sometime between 6:00 and 8:00 pm. In the evening, Layla hangs out with family, playing with toys. She falls asleep around 9:30 pm.

Layla is great with people and has been friendly toward everyone she has met both at home and outside. She can be timid at first but is thrilled to meet people and wags her tail quickly. Layla is surprisingly gentle for her size, and I haven't seen her jump on anyone out of excitement. She also hasn't barked at anyone.

Layla met children on her transport from Louisiana and was smitten. She has also met children in the park near our home and has been very willing to stand gently or sit while getting pets from them.

Layla is a low energy dog. She will occasionally get the zoomies (usually when we return from a walk), but is very calm most of the time. She enjoys her two walks per day, and I think she'd be sad if she didn't get those. She likes to walk for about 30-40 minutes each time and walks at a leisurely pace, enjoy the sights and the smells. Layla is very good on a leash and rarely pulls. We haven't needed to use a harness with her.

Layla has not interacted with other dogs inside our home but has interacted very well with dogs she encounters on walks. She does not bark at other dogs, even if they bark at her, and when given the chance to meet other dogs, she has been gentle and respectful. Layla had an opportunity to play in the park with a neighbor's medium-large dog and had a blast wrestling with him. She didn't seem to have any issues understanding boundaries and cues.

Layla will make sad noises at first when put in her crate, if she thinks she has been left alone, but she quickly adjusts and usually naps. We have not let her free roam when left alone because she tends to find shoes or paper to chew if she gets bored. Based on her personality, she probably wouldn't be very happy being home alone all day.

Layla was positive for Anaplasmosis, a tick-borne disease, in April but is not showing any clinical signs. A positive result for Anaplasmosis just indicates antibodies to this bacteria, not necessarily active infection. Per our rescue protocol, she is currently being given a round of antibiotics.

Whoever adopts Layla is going to be so lucky to have such a great dog! We had not previously fostered a dog of her size, and I wasn't sure how we'd do with a larger dog, but she has been so well-behaved and laid-back. Layla has a beautiful coat and hasn't seemed to shed much. She's calm and quiet most of the time, and she's just so happy to be near people. We have loved having her and know she will bring happiness to her forever home.
