PUPDATE 3
Herbert's getting smarter and smarter by the day! He loves to show off his tricks (especially sit, which is always paired with an extremely wiggly, very proud tail) and is improving his puppy manners so well. Herb's doing fantastic with house training and still sleeping like a dream overnight - he definitely enjoys his beauty sleep! We had some alone time recently while my resident pup was away and he did great on his own - he keeps himself busy with a chew toy or looking out the window and would come by to sit with me or get pets while I was working. He's a great companion!!
PUPDATE 2
Herbert stayed with a dog sitter for the weekend and had so much fun! He was a little overwhelmed at first, but settled in quickly and hit the ground running with his foster friends after a short time. He loved having puppy friends to play with and was relatively respectful of the adult pups’ cues after a few corrections.
He did great going potty outside after a couple accidents the first day. Once he figured out the routine, he did great with lots of opportunities to go.
He met two kitties there and was initially really unsure (almost scared) of the cats and would bark at them. The barking subsided and then he became very curious. He was pretty overzealous and wanted to play chase quite a bit so I think he would need some work on boundaries to be able to live with a kitty.
He settled in to the crate after about ten minutes of protest. He did better when he was really pooped out. A tired puppy is a good puppy.
He is a pretty typical puppy that just loves to be outside and playing with his friends or toys. He definitely was a snuggle bug after the first day or so and did wonderful adjusting to a new environment. We can't wait to see who scoops this sweet little dude up!
PUPDATE 1
Herbert is a phenomenal sleeper, usually 7-8 hours overnight in his crate and he awakes with the happiest tail to greet you in the morning! We go outside for potty anytime he wakes up, leaves his crate or playpen, or after a long play session and he's been doing so well with potty training when we stick to that routine. He adores my resident dog and they'll usually have a long play session after breakfast. He spends about half the day in his crate/playpen while I work, and half the day free to roam about the apartment.
Herbert is a social butterfly - he wants to greet every passerby on walks and those puppy eyes seem to always get their way! His whole body wiggles and his tail wags and he'll go straight in for the kisses. He's a very typical mouthy puppy, especially when excited, so we're starting to work on slower greetings and that not everything needs to go in the mouth. He has not met any children while I’ve been fostering him.
Herbert’s energy levels are pretty average for a puppy. He has spurts of energy throughout the day but quickly tires after a play session. We average two 30-minute walks/day and play outside/inside with my resident dog. He's working on his leash manners -- Herbert wants to see the world when we're out on a walk! He doesn't chase or pull much, but is a serial sniffer and zig zags any which way to smell all the smells.
Herbert loves meeting and playing with other dogs. He shows great play cues and body language when playing - when he's super excited he sounds like a little dinosaur grumbling. On walks, he'll sometimes barks at things passing by - dogs he wants to meet, or figures he doesn't understand (bicycles, kites, etc.) but we're doing a little distraction training and he's catching on quickly! He has not met any cats while I’ve been fostering him.
I work from home so Herbert is only truly alone ~2-3 hours/day and Herbert hangs out in his crate when I leave. I monitor with a home camera and he seems to do quite well in his crate -- a few whimpers and whines when he thinks he's missing out on something but he tends to settle quickly. If you toss a peanut butter Kong or lickimat in there, he'll enjoy that and usually fall right asleep after!
Herbert is a goofball and a lovebug! He's extremely food motivated and quick to pick up on tricks - in the span of about three days he learned Sit, Down, Look at Me, and Shake. He's a funny, clumsy puppy and has been a delight to foster - he'll make a wonderful addition to any family!
