Bernie found his family January 5, 2021!

Bernard (or Bernie) is a 9-week-old puppy born into foster care in Wisconsin! Bernard usually wakes up around 7 am and goes out to go potty. He eats three meals a day, around 8am, noon, and again at 6pm. He spends the rest of his day alternating between napping a playing with my parent’s resident mini schnauzer. He goes out to go potty every 1-2 hours. Bernard takes a long nap in the evening, then goes potty and then into his crate when I go to bed. He has been sleeping in the crate for about 7 hours at night without needing a break.

Bernard has loved all people that he's met. With new people, he is sometimes a bit shy at first, but warms up very quickly and will give a cuddle or a lick. He will cuddle in next to anyone on the couch when he's tired.

He has spent extended time with my 10-year-old cousin and did very well. He is a typical puppy and can sometimes be nippy so interactions would need to be supervised.

Bernard is a medium energy dog. He will play hard when in the mood, but nap hard as well. He loves a teething chew or playing tug. He will always find a cozy spot to nap on a pillow, or in his favorite spot by the door snuggled on my winter coat. He has done well on the leash when taken around the block or in the backyard to go potty. Bernard has been working on a few commands as well. He has been making good progress on "sit" and "lay down". He seems like he would be a quick learner, especially if there's treats involved.

Bernard has been great with other dogs. He loves to play with my parent’s miniature schnauzer. He is not the most coordinated, but he's brave and wants to be in on the action. He's met a few other pups as well. With new dogs, Bernard is very curious, but also sometimes a bit shy right away. He usually warms up after a couple of sniffs.  Bernard has not been exposed to cats.

With the holidays, Bernard has not been left alone much. We have been practicing crating during the day a bit. He usually will whine for a few minutes and then settle in. He is a typical puppy and will get into things he shouldn't or have an accident, so he should be left in his crate when alone.

Bernard has a grade 1-2 heart murmur representing some element of heart disease. It’s recommended that adopters discuss the condition with their veterinarian prior to adoption. Depending on the cause of the murmur, he may still grow out of it or he may always have the murmur.

Bernard is a sweet, cuddly, clumsy, and sometimes sassy puppy. He will bring so much happiness into his future home!
