Beck is a smart, playful, energetic pup, that does have a shy, timid side to him until he warms up and feels comfortable. He will do great with a family that will take it slow, but also will implement rules as Beck likes to get into mischief (like counter-surfing or chewing on socks/clothes). Beck can be a huge cuddler and will plop right on the couch with us, or he will be seen with the zoomies running back and forth through our house. Beck plays really well with our two resident Border Collies in our backyard; he loves having the companions to wrestle around with and chase. He does have a strong prey drive and will chase any small critters or animals. Beck hasn’t been around any cats; with his strong prey drive, we’re unsure how he would do. He hasn’t been around a ton of kids either, but the few occurrences he has been they’ve been good as long as the kids go slow.
Beck’s routine each day is pretty consistent: he’s let outside in the morning to potty and roam for a bit; eats breakfast; goes in his kennel while I work; gets let out to potty, roam, and play with our resident pups for the rest of the day; eats dinner; then we end each night by going on a walk. He typically doesn’t sleep in his kennel at night but settles down well when he does.
Beck would do best with a family that is active as he loves to be outside and play. He does love fetch but we’ve noticed he’s oddly particular about what balls and toys he prefers for fetch. He absolutely needs some kind of fence. Right now we use an electric fence with Beck and it works pretty well. He has escaped, but when we’ve used no fence Beck loved to leave our yard and roam our cul-de-sac.
Beck did have significant anxiety when he lived in an apartment in downtown Madison where there was a lot of commotion and loud noises. As that situation was not ideal, we recommend Beck to live in a more secluded, quiet, residential neighborhood. Beck currently does very well in our residential neighborhood right outside of Madison. We have noticed significantly less anxiety and he seems to feel a lot more at ease and comfortable. It did take Beck a short time to warm up to us, but once he knows he can trust you, he’s the funniest little guy.
Beck will be a great addition to an active family that can handle his high energy and a family that is willing to get him trained and to build some confidence in him. That way he can be more comfortable in busier environments and has a few more manners so he’s not snatching food off the counter when you’re not looking. :)
