Updates

PUPDATE 2

Ted has made great progress with crate training! Sometimes he still barks a bit when he goes in, but quiets down quickly. Most of the time he goes in and is quiet. He is entertained by a frozen peanut butter Kong or one of his other toys.

Ted has done much better with potty training as well. We’ve learned his cues and make sure he gets outside before he has an accident. He had a favorite spot to poop, which makes cleaning up super easy.

Ted made friends with the neighbor’s dogs and loves to run with them. One neighbor’s dog is much larger than he is, but he doesn’t let her size intimidate him. He’s good at picking up cues from other dogs as to whether they are friendly or not.

Ted has learned a few commands. He knows sit, off, out, and down. He does very well with no as well. He’s small enough he can fit through our fence, but stops trying when I say no. His harness also prevents him from slipping through the fence.

Ted does well walking on a leash. We are starting to work on leash manners now that he’s adjusted to having a leash on and not being able to freely run. We will start will having him walk next to me instead of ahead or behind.

Ted is such a snuggle bug! He loves being near his people and wants to snuggle up next to your feet or next to you.

We worked on food/treat issues. I’ve taken treats away and played with him and his food while he was eating. We’ve had no issues. He lets me take his treats and/or food. My 6 year old also tried taking his food away, but Ted didn’t seem to care. He ran up and licked his face before eating again. I would still be a bit cautious while Ted adjusts to his new home.

PUPDATE 1

Ted wakes up around 5-6am to go potty. He prefers to play and chew on some toys for awhile before eating breakfast around 8am. He likes to graze his way through the day. I divide his food up into two meals, but leave it out all day if he doesn't finish his breakfast/dinner. We go back outside every 1-2 hours since I'm retired. He gets a treat and lots of praise whenever he goes potty outside. Ted plays for about 2 hours before he takes a nap. He chews on toys, but does not destroy them. He's rather gentle with his toys. Some days he naps more often and doesn't have as much energy. Ted goes back outside one last time before bed around 10pm and may wake up during the night if he had a lot to drink after 7pm. Ted has only slept from 10pm-6am one day. He also does voluntarily go into his crate during the day. I leave the door open. He'll go in to chew on toys. Keep in mind he's been here a week, as of this first entry.

Ted LOVES people! He likes to greet people on walks and out in public. He enjoys the pet store and all the new smells. Ted enjoys snuggling when he naps. He will lay by our feet or is allowed to snuggle on our lap or next to us. He lives in a rambunctious household and does well with the loud times and the quiet times. Ted will give kisses, try to get people to play with his toys with him, and likes to jump up on people. We've been working on that along with his using our hands/feet as a chew toy.

I do have some concerns about him with younger children who may not know how to read a dog’s body language and signals. Ted showed some guarding behavior with a bone he was chewing on. He has been good with our boys, ages 6, 7, 8, and 9. All of our kids are experienced with dogs, since I've been a foster home for 7 years. I would recommend older children or those who are respectful of dogs and their spaces.

Ted has medium energy. He enjoys playing with toys, playing tug-of-war inside the house, running outside, being chased, chasing you, and just enjoying the grass and sunshine. He is learning how to walk on a leash and does rather well. We will begin to work on stopping and sitting at the end of a street this week. I use a harness when we walk.

Ted loves other dogs, but is a bit afraid of larger dogs and dogs who bark a lot. He's made friends with our neighbor's dogs behind our home and loves to run the fence line with them. Ted recently met a bunch of new dog friends at a Fetch fundraiser. He was very excited and wanted to play with them. He hasn't met other dogs inside our home.

Ted met our foster cat. She's doesn't particularly care for other animals. She swatted at him and Ted ran away. He's left her alone ever since then. They do sniff each other under the door and "talk" to each other.

Ted is crated when left alone. He has only been alone a few times and for short periods of time. He is usually quiet when we come home, except for when he really has to go potty. Ted is learning how to be a solo dog right now. In his former foster home, he was one of several puppies. He's only been with us for a week and has made significant progress.

Ted is doing really well with potty training. When he has an accident in the house, he uses the puppy pads rather than the floor. Because of his size, we take him out once every hour or two during the day. If he doesn't go potty, I make sure he does the next time we go out before we come back inside. He is not a fan of the colder and wet weather, but LOVES to be close to and snuggle with his humans.

Ted is a super sweet and snuggly guy! He just needs some more time to adjust to being a family member and some patience to continue learning how to live inside a home. He does sleep in bed with us at night because crate training did not go well initially. He would panic, bite the door, and had me concerned he would harm himself by his behavior. All of that has changed since he arrived. He now just barks, whines, and makes noises when he's first placed in his crate.
