Updates

PUPDATE 4

Edward is getting ready for Howl-ween and has his costume all picked out for a Jurassic Park theme. He would love to be able to wear his dinosaur costume in his forever home for Halloween though.

We have been fostering Edward for almost 3 months now and he is such a sweetheart. We are constantly impressed with how well he has settled in and Edward is a dream foster dog. He is calm during the day, nothing bothers him or startles him, he takes his pills twice a day with no issue. We can trust him around everyone while we are out and about. He's never met anyone he didn't immediately love and is always excited to meet new humans and dogs. Edward is such a smart dog and will make an amazing companion for life. He has become my shadow around the house. When I work from home, he sleeps on the couch behind me. When I'm cooking in the kitchen he will find a spot nearby to snooze but stay close. He is fantastic with his crate and races into his crate at night when I ask "Do you want to go to bed?" He also crates up during the day wonderfully. He LOVES meeting new dogs and is absolutely amazing with every dog he has met. He is definitely not an alpha dog and does great when other dogs tell him to leave them alone too. He is such a calm pup inside and loves to zoom around the backyard outside. He loves meeting new people and will do anything for a treat. He hasn't had any accidents inside since we put bells on our back door almost two months ago.

Edward has played great with dogs of all sizes. We have 2 resident cats in our home which he is good with. He does occasionally try to play with the cats when they would like to be left alone, but a quick "no" and he will walk away. One of our cats is a bit sassy and likes to tease Edward by getting close but then swatting at Edward when he tries to say hi, but Edward never minds and loves having the cats nearby.

Edward's typical routine is up around 9 am, eat breakfast, go potty outside, inside for a nap while I work. Between 12 and 1 outside for some exercise and playtime, and then 1-5 he happily plays with toys on the floor or sleeps on the couch while I continue to work. At 5 he goes outside again for more exercise and plays with our resident dog. In the evening we still let him out every 2 hours or whenever he rings the bells, and then we let him out one last time before bed around 11 or 12.

Edward loves snuggles and attention and pets but is also content to sleep on the couch next to you or nearby on the floor. Sometimes he fancies himself a lap dog, but most of the time he just wants his humans close by so he can keep an eye on you. Edward does occasionally likes to talk to tell you about his days, but his wooing never lasts long and he is easily redirected. When he's outside he only ever barks to tell us he wants to come in.

PUPDATE 3

Last week we took Edward to the Madison Night Market and he did amazing! He did great on his leash and was super happy to say “hello” to anyone who would give him attention. He got to say “hi” to lots of dogs and he absolutely loved that. He is a great dog to take anywhere and is always ready for an adventure! This past weekend Edward went to the opening of Dulcy Dog Photography Studio and he made himself the official greeter of everyone who came in the door. He was so polite and kind and used all of the training he's gotten to be the best greeter possible.

Edward has continued to do amazing with using bells to tell us he needs to go out in the evening and hasn't had an accident inside in several weeks. He has really settled into our routine and sleeps on the couch most of the day while I work from home. He has calmed down around our cats and now our cats like spending time with him. He has continued to do fantastic in his crate and will rush inside of it when asked so that he can get a treat. He typically sleeps in his crate from 12pm to 9am and then often gets a 1-2 hour afternoon nap in his crate while we run errands.

Edward still loves running around the backyard and wants to play with every dog he meets. Inside he has definitely calmed down and spends a lot of the day napping. We do have to keep a close eye on him because he will occasionally try to chew on things that arent toys, but he easily redirects to better toys when prompted. He is super food motivated and will do just about anything for a treat.

Edward's seizure meds have continued to work great and he hasn't had any seizures since starting a new med last month.

PUPDATE 2

Edward has been doing totally great with bell training and hasn't had any accidents inside the house in over a week. He loves ringing the bells to go outside. During the day we take him out every 3-4 hours and then in the evening, he goes out about once an hour. He is great in his crate, settles down very quickly, and has never had accidents in his crate.

He has been calming down about the cats a lot and no longer tries to play with them every time he sees them. He would still do best with some dog-savvy cats. Ours are good at telling him to leave them alone.

He absolutely loves running around the yard and playing fetch. He loves going for walks and walking right next to our resident dog.

He does great in the car. We have him sit in the backseat and then use a short dog seat buckle to attach to his harness. This helps keep him in the backseat because he would prefer to sit in the front seat with us. He loves going for car rides and sticking his head out the window. On the highway, he curls up for a nap immediately.

Edward loves toys, squeaky toys, chew toys, and tennis balls. He can always be found with a toy in his mouth and loves rummaging our toy baskets to find the best one to play with.

PUPDATE

Edward sleeps in his crate in our laundry room through the night and happily sleeps until we wake him up, normally between 8-9 am. Then he gets breakfast and his morning meds. He takes his meds great with just a handful of food or a spoonful of peanut butter. Then he heads outside to go to the bathroom and play with our resident dog. He loves to play fetch and run around the yard. After coming inside he will play with toys and naps on a couch in my office as I work, he will also happily go into his crate if I need to go into work. Most days he can be found napping on top of a short cat perch I have in my office or on a rocking chair in another room, both of which are way too small for him, but he loves to be curled up watching us work. In the afternoon he loves to munch on a rawhide or toy. He loves to be close to us and anytime we sit down on a couch, he will hop right up to cuddle in next to us. During the day if he's struggling to settle down, we put out a snuffle mat, which is just a fabric mat that allows him to dig and sniff through to find food, and he loves going through it to find every last treat.

Edward loves to meet new people and has never met a person he didn’t love. When he meets new people sometimes he gets too excited and tries to jump up to get closer to them. We have been working on this with him and he has gotten much better about not jumping. We just give him some time to calm down and then he gets to say hello. After the initial hello, he is a wonderful dog to our guests and will just wander around to whoever will give him pets or treats. He is the same trying to greet people out of the house. We took him to Home Depot and he had a blast and wanted to say “hello” to everyone. We have been working on his manners as he thinks licking strangers legs is an appropriate way to say hello. He is such a sweet cuddle bug though and just wants everyone he meets to love him back.

He's been around kids as young as 10 years old with us but easily gets excited and mouthy with arms and legs and may nip. We have been working with him on the mouthiness and nipping and he has improved significantly in the past few weeks. He is still learning and needs guidance to remind him to not play rough with small children, so a home with older kids would be best for now.

Edward is a medium energy dog. If he is given the time to run out his energy outside his just wants to be a couch potato the rest of the day. He loves playing fetch and its a great way to get him to run around the yard. He also loves zipping around the yard with our resident dog. 1-2 hours a day of outside running around playing is about what it takes to wear him out. He can be a little restless if not given enough exercise and will wander around and "talk" to let you know he wants to play. A good walk in the morning or a round of fetch wears him out so that he settles down on the couch right away though.

So far he's been great with every dog he's met and listens to our resident dogs' corrections well. We think he'd do amazing with another medium to high energy dog his size or bigger to play with and help teach him manners when needed. He gets very excited and vocal when meeting new dogs and wants to play right away so he will need encouragement to be calm during introductions. He also loves to wrestle while playing. Our resident dog wasn’t a big fan of this in the beginning but he eventually won her over and they now wrestle lots. Edward has always been good about listieng to her corrections when she says his wrestling is too much.

Edward is still learning how to play properly with other animals. He currently lives with cats but tends to forget that they aren't big dogs like him and may need reminders that he cannot play rough and nip at their legs. He would probably be too much for a skittish cat but he's trying to learn how to play from our dog-savvy cats with our help.

We crate Edward when we leave as he still has some puppy energy and hasn't earned free roaming privilege's yet. When Edward first arrived he was vocal for the first week or so when he was put in his crate. He had no objections to going in the crate, but didnt like when we left the room, he always eventually settled himself down, and once settled down was happy in the crate. After learning the routine he has settled in knowing that we'll come back. Now that he is all settled in, he goes right in his crate and lays down for a nap. His separation anxiety has improved incredibly with crate training and consistency. Since he may whine or bark the first week or so he would probably be best not in an apartment until he learns his new routine.

Edward occasionally has accidents in the evening as his medication makes him extra thirsty so he drinks a lot but we have been working hard on bell training him. He never has accidents in his crate and he will happily wear belly bands as well. We're hoping that since he is picking up bell training so quickly that his accidents will get better with some positive reinforcement. Between bell training and taking him out every hour between 6pm and bedtime he is only have 2-3 accidents a week. Almost all of his accidents have been when we havent gotten him outside frequently enough at night.

Edward has a history of seizures. These seem to be pretty well controlled on his current medication (combination of phenobarbital and keppra). The medications run around $60 a month depending on generics and coupons (goodrx). He will need monitoring of blood levels a few times a year (simple blood test) to make sure he is continuing to tolerate the phenobarbital well.

Edward LOVES all food and is willing to do just about anything for a treat.
