Prince
Anatolian Shepherd | DOB 09/20/2022 | Neutered Male | 75 LBs
QUICK FACTS: ✔️ Good with other dogs! ✔️ Potty trained! ✔️ Can free roam when humans are gone! ✔️ Walks well on leash! ✔️ Could do well in an apartment! ✔️ Okay for beginner dog owner!
✅ Prince is a pretty mellow dog. He settled in quickly but we discovered he doesn’t like to be shut in anywhere. We took him in our bedroom with us the first night with the door shut and he got very anxious, pacing and panting. I slept out in the living room with him and he was just fine. Second night we just let him have free reign and he slept in the living room. Now he will wander into the bedroom sometimes and sleep. I think he would be pretty stressed out in a crate.
✅ We have left him alone twice now and he has just laid down and rested. No issues. He does like to chew and has snuck a shoe and dryer balls and nibbled on a fabric ottoman, but no real damage and no attempt on other inside furniture. He has his nylon and wood bones and occasional collagen stick to satisfy that.
✅ Completely house broken. As a matter of fact he won’t go outside again after about 7:30pm when we get back from a walk until morning. We sit outside about 7:00 while I have my tea and he lays down and waits for his morning walk to do his business.
✅ Speaking of walks - he was a little confused and nervous the first time but now he loves going for walks! We use a harness and he is fabulous - no pulling.
✅ He is very curious about other people and dogs and acts quite friendly. Met a little girl (5-6) on a walk and reacted happily. (Note: Jody brought her 2-year-old granddaughter over to meet him, and Prince was wonderful with her as well)
✅ Friendly with all people- on walks and in our home. And if you’ll rub his tummy….friends for life.
✅ First few times going in the car he was very scared and anxious - I had to actually lift him into the car. Now he wants to go in the car all the time (I think because it takes him to super fun places to walk). He needs the windows open still to be comfortable-he gets anxious if you go at a speed that you need to do up the windows, but hopefully he will get used to that as well, soon.
✅ He rarely barks and so far it’s been a couple times just at us when he wanted us to pay attention. He does however howl with police/fire/ambulance sirens. It's hilarious.
✅ He is allowed on the couch but luckily has made no attempt at a bed!
✅ He likes to do a little fetching of his toys outside with us, we walk twice a day, and he does play on his own a bit inside with his toys, but he is generally low-medium energy I’d say.
Prince is a medium energy dog who can be extremely goofy and has a lot of personality. He loves being outside and enjoys going on walks. Prince walks very well on a leash. If he stops walking or shows interest in a bird or bunny, he can be re-directed with minimal effort. He has encountered deer and has been on high alert when passing them, but did not attempt to chase them. We have put Prince on a tie out in the yard while being outside and he will sit or lay in the grass and is very content!
Prince has times each day where he turns into a playful puppy. He is an earlier riser in the morning and does best settling back down after a morning walk. He loves playing with dogs and is good about finding toys and entertaining himself. Prince has a streak of mischievousness in him at times and will try to chew on things that are not toys. He is very sneaky about this! Prince will easily give up items that he is not supposed to have.
Prince lived with cats for approximately one week. He was not aggressive with the cats and there was not a fear he would hurt them. However, Prince had zero chill when it came to the cats and very badly wanted to make friends with them, including chasing, sniffing, play-bowing, and barking when they ran back under the baby gate to "safety". It is expected that he would do very well with cats that are already dog-savvy or would stand their ground to his brand of play.
Prince loves people and getting pets, especially belly rubs! He is very gentle, but may paw you if you aren’t paying attention and he doesn’t feel like he got enough pets. Prince has met a number of children in a public setting and was very calm with kids of all ages. Prince knows “sit” and “down" and is quick to do these for a treat. He seems to be very tolerant of having his ears rubbed, head pet, and brushing. The biggest struggle we have had with brushing is that he will try to roll over for belly rubs while trying to brush him!
We were given information from the previous foster that Prince does not like being shut in places so we have not attempted to put him in the crate. We plan to test out a crate for Prince in the near future. Currently, when we leave the house, Prince has a designated area that we gate off. He is able to jump over short gates. Prince can chew on non-toy items when bored. Prince has been left alone for 8 hours on a couple of occasions and did well overall, but found paper (books) and cardboard to chew on. He loves sleeping on the couch. Prince has slept through the night outside of a crate without getting into any trouble. Prince is completely housebroken!
Prince is a wonderful dog! Don’t miss your chance to meet this gentle giant!
