Spunky little Polka Dot is a sweet girl looking for her forever home. While it takes her a bit to warm up to new people, she really came out of her shell with the help of my resident dog and other foster dog. The “big kids” help give her confidence. We all get up around 6:30 a.m. and she goes outside to do her business before coming in for breakfast. I feed the dogs separately to avoid issues.
When it’s time for me to go to work, Dot goes in her crate pretty easily with a peanut butter-filled Kong placed toward the back of the crate. I have a dog cam in the room with her and while she will whine and cry for maybe 5-10 minutes after I leave, she appears to mostly lay around and sleep in the crate the whole day while I’m gone. If my dog hears something and starts barking, that tends to set her off as well. She’ll definitely whine and cry if I put her in the crate and don’t leave right away.
When I return home, she goes outside again to do her business and run around and play with the dogs. We usually go on a walk at that point before eating dinner. She’s still working on walking on leash since she hasn’t had much experience. The rest of the night is filled with playing with the dogs, chewing on hard toys or tennis balls, playing outside if the weather is nice, and playing with my young, dog-friendly cat. Dot is closer to his size than the older dogs and I think they connect as the youngsters in the house.
A typical puppy, she will need work on not jumping on people, walking on leash, learning commands, etc. as she grows up. She would be good for a beginner dog owner either with or without other animals. Another dog would help her warm up to people more quickly, but it’s not necessary that she go to a home with another dog. Because of how loud her cries can sometimes be, she would do best in a house or home without shared walls. Overall she’s a fairly medium-energy dog. She definitely gets the puppy zoomies and loves to play with my other foster dog, but then she’ll flop down on the couch with everyone else when the activity dies down. After the first few days, she has shown that she’s a pretty good snuggle bug with me and the other pets. She has had a few accidents early on but is pretty well potty trained if kept on a regular schedule. She is crated when I leave during the day and overnight since she’s still a pup and I can’t trust that she won’t get into trouble. She has kept her crate clean. I have not seen her interact with children.
Overall, Dot is a spunky little pup who takes a bit of time to warm up to people but quickly settled in as a member of the dog pack in my house. It’ll be fun to watch her grow and develop confidence.
