If I had to define a one-year lab mix, it would be Paul. He is a super fun, friendly, energetic pup who wants to play as much as possible, is food motivated, and eager to learn. He's learned to love life out of the shelter, where he can run around his yard, goad the resident pup into lots of play sessions, and enjoy his humans. He goes in and out of puppy play mode where he needs to get his energy out, to crashing for a while. He's almost fully crate trained — getting him in is a game, but once he's in, he's fine with it. He's mostly housetrained (still peeing inside every so often when he's in play mode and forgets he should go outside) and very rarely chews non-toys as long as he has toy options. Paul does very well with other dogs, and got the resident pup to warm up to him very quickly. The neighbor dog can be a bit prickly but he did well with her when she came over to play, even when she snapped at him a few times, he just backed away. Paul is working on his leash manners — he mostly is so excited to see people and dogs on walks that he vocalizes that excitement. He politely greets humans and dogs on walks once he gets to meet them. Paul has met several kids, ages 8-15, and he's good with them: very non-aggressive and never fixated on them. However, he does get easily riled up by energetic kids and starts to mouth when he gets excited. So he can go to a home with kids, but preferably one where the parents work with Paul on redirecting energy and work with the kids on how to respond to his energy.
In short, Paul is the dog you want if you say you want a one-year-old lab mix. He's not perfect — yet — but has all the signs of getting there as he grows out of puppy stage if his adoptive family guides him in the right direction. He will almost certainly be a fun, youthful, loving dog for years to come!
