PUPDATE 2
Pamina has been extending her comfort zone, deciding that everyone in my apartment building is there to meet her and that mover’s equipment isn’t all that scary after all! It’s really fun to see her become bolder, plus she’s getting plenty of practice sitting and letting folks and dogs go by when they are not, in fact, there to meet her.
We’ve gone on walks near the lake and in prairie areas and she has a blast smelling the smells and trying to catch leaves, moths, and birds. She’s also been enjoying sitting on my deck. This pup loves the outdoors!
She now enters her crate willingly – for a treat anyway – and is working on “come” and “stay” commands. Her potty training has also gotten more consistent. She signals and has only used the pee pads when I couldn’t take her out due to my work schedule. She’s also done well free roaming (in part of the apartment) while we are out for a few hours.
We’re going to miss seeing how this fun and sweet pup continues to learn and grow!
PUPDATE 1
Don’t let her looks fool you, Pamina (or “Mina”) is a happy, playful, and smart girl! She’s easily settled into foster and I think will continue to become even more fun and sweet in her forever home.
Pamina loves to be near her humans, cuddling next to you on the couch (or the bed if you’ll let her). She is often found snoozling in the sun or curled up where she can keep an eye on you. Sometimes she has a soft snore which is definitely more adorable than disruptive.
She also loves toys! Stuffys, squeakers, bones… she’ll happily play with any and all of them! She grabs one from the toy box, prances back to wherever she is playing, and plays for a few minutes before repeating the cycle until the box is empty and she has all the toys out around her.
She is very much still a puppy, but a well behaved one. She can get a little mouthy when playing and has been known to grab a shoe but generally has been responding to a firm “No” and redirection to a more appropriate chew toy.
Pamina does well in her crate although she will voice her disapproval at being away from you initially before settling down. We are working on making the crate more fun for her, hiding treats and making it part of her command practice (she also knows sit and down), and she is getting more comfortable going in on her own.
She is working on her potty training but once she settled into a routine has had only a few accidents. She is taken out every 3-4 hours, is starting to signal when she needs to go out and will use a pee pad in the house for unexpected potty breaks. She is almost sleeping through the night – she makes it anywhere from 4-7 hours before waking us up. She can be somewhat of a nervous peer and is easily distracted, so we have found a specific location that is quiet that we use for most of her potty breaks.
She is decent on leash – a bit of a weaver – and really enjoys smelling while out on walks up to a mile each day. Pamina is also always on the lookout for another dog to play with. She is known to run around joyfully in an enclosed space – think she’d be a perfect candidate for doggy daycare and visiting dog parks.
She was recently spayed and has taken it like a champ but will need to be on somewhat restricted activity for the next two weeks as she heals. She has a slight overbite (perhaps the cause of the sweet snoring?) and will need a repeat sedated oral exam in the next 1-2 months. Pamina will likely require a dental care to either cap or extract the teeth that are causing lesions on the palate.
Pamina can be a bit of a scaredy cat. She has gotten startled by trucks, the vacuum, movers, and sneezing. Often, she brushes it off but when she is more cautious she can be coaxed with treats to move through/around the concerning situation.
If you are looking for a loyal and loving sidekick with the softest fur, Pamina would love to meet you!
