PUPDATE 4
Winter update on Major. Since his board and train, he’s been working on so many things. Kenneling and place command, and mind your own business. So Major is insecure and constantly looks to me for cues, I’m trying to let him make his own decisions instead of him at my side constantly. This spring I want to start asking a few people to come in my home while he is kenneled. He is pretty safe in his house but I know he can do it.
Major is a happy guy, he knows many commands and listens well. He can be stubborn and lazy at times but he’s so goofy. It’s taking some time to totally trust me, he likes having structure, he knows when we eat of course, and loves a nice walk. His people would need patience and time to get to know him. We are still working on his weight, he is on a raw diet currently and is doing better with his allergies. He also does five minutes three times a week on the treadmill. We can’t wait until the spring so we can get out a little more on the pack walks.
PUPDATE 3
This weather has been great for Major. He loves our morning jog and can’t wait to get to the trail.
We recently had someone interested and even though he had 4 meets, it didn’t work out. I have a great group of dog lovers that meet many times a week and Major is doing so well with everyone. My mindset now is an adopter who will take the time to get to know this guy. Major is a great man! He wants to please, to love, to be obedient and be lazy. He wants to be social, he wants affection. He will not kiss… I beg, but nope. He is a big man, but now that he’s lost some weight he wants to play and have fun. His personality is exploding and it’s so funny.
PUPDATE 2
Major is bursting with joy lately. We hang out many nights a week with a mixed group of dogs and just talk. He is taking flat hand treats from four people and we will try petting him soon. He is so good with this group I’m excited for him. He has lost more weight and has found a dog he likes to play with Rue. His favorite thing is to lay out on the couch outside and watch people walk by. They talk to him but don’t approach which he’s great with. We continue our pack walks every weekend and he loves to show everyone the way. He allows other fosters to walk close to him. We do the place command with sit and lay and he is perfect. He is such a lug that just needs a bit to trust. We have crossed so many barriers. Such a great boy Major… I’m so proud of his progress.
PUPDATE 1
Meet Major. Let’s start with why I get soft on him. He’s a big ole polar bear who is always looking to his leader for comfort. He’s great with car rides, and is a gentleman in the house when left out alone. He is a pro at fly catching, and loves to sit outside and watch people walk by.
Due to his size, he hasn’t played yet with other dogs, but doesn’t appear to dislike them. We do weekly pack walks with all different ages and sizes of dogs as well as multiple daily walks to keep him social in our busy neighborhood. About that size, he’s a big guy at 130 pounds. He’s definitely looking for that adopter who will keep him on a weight loss plan, so he can live a full and healthy life.
In addition to his weight loss needs, he needs an adopter who will continue working on managing his guarding issues. He has never been reactive towards his foster mom or trainer, but he is protective with against strangers. Since this is the case, we are looking for a home without children. He will need very slow introductions and needs a quieter home. Major has been through extensive training, ongoing training that includes multiple balanced methods such as prong, muzzle, e-collar, lure stick. He has been making great progress.
The vet noted some tartar accumulation and Major will need a dental in the next 1-2 years. In the meantime he can eat dental treats to help prevent further tartar accumulation. Major is on a diet and his ideal weight range is 80-90 pounds. An adopter should plan to help him continue his weight lose journey.
Due to the needs of his big ole polar bear, we will spend some time with prospective adopters before letting Major go off to his forever home. Slow meets are always recommended. We will work with you to make sure you are familiar with his quicks and have a confident grasp on his training needs. Major is a special dog looking for his perfect match!
