Meet Lana! This sweet girl is an absolute joy to be around, and everyone who meets her falls in love.
Lana has absolutely no clue what personal space is. She will crawl into your lap if you sit anywhere and is not shy about gently nudging you with her paws until she's comfortable. She will lick your face dry if you don't stop her. Lana is genuinely one of the cuddliest dogs we have ever met! Everyone she meets is her best friend, but she won't jump on you over-excitedly - rather she will snuggle into you, sit on your feet, and ask for pets with puppy dog eyes and soft kisses.
Our sweet Lady Lana is super smart but not very food motivated - most treats she gently takes from us, then brings them over to the carpet and investigates them closer before she decides if she wants to eat it or not. She picks up on what we're asking of her super quickly (for example - she knows that my roommate doesn't want her on her bed, even though she cuddles us both on the couch and in my bed all the time) and we're working on adding to her obedience skills. She looks very Border Collie-like and has the brain and sometimes energy of the breed, but also has the clumsiness and charm of a Lab - she tends to think she's more agile than what she's actually capable of and our floors are a little slippery.
Once we got into a routine with her, Lana does so well at being in the crate. She loves to have a bit of background noise, either from us talking or having a show on in the background (she's currently on season 2 of How I Met Your Mother). She definitely needs a show on in order to fall asleep in her crate. If you let her sleep in your bed, she'll make herself right at home and cuddle you all night long. Otherwise she's done great at sleeping in the crate with a bit of coaxing to go in, and lets you know when she's awake with a few quiet whines. Most days we have a bit of a cuddle before we go for a walk. She won't push me out the door by whining or barking, but once I'm changing clothes, putting on my shoes, and grabbing my bag, she catches on to what is happening and will wiggle all over the place as I try to put on her harness.
Lana really loves our longer walks in the morning - normally 2+ miles - before having breakfast in her crate and then having a nap in there after. She'll hang out in the crate no problem while we do work, but also happily naps next to our feet or on the couch if we have her out and about. During the day she naps, gets pets, people-watches out the window, and will assist us with any walkable errands. Some days we get to do a decent walk in the evenings as well, but she's also been totally fine with quick jaunts around the block on our busier days. She's not had any accidents in the house! Overall, she's very adaptable to our schedule and is just happy to go along with what we're doing.
I'd classify her as medium energy because she never seems to tire on our walks and is always willing to go on an adventure, but when we can't spend that much time outside, she doesn't go stir crazy at home. Lana doesn't actively seek out toys on her own a ton, but she always loves to play with us - her prior fosters had dogs that she played with, but we don't have our own. She would do well as an only dog, but with a slow introduction, she might love having dog siblings. Her previous fosters say she does better with younger male dogs.
Lana has been in foster homes for most of her care, so she doesn't have too many hidden fears that we've come across. On walks, she does really great on a shorter leash - we have one that we can put around our waists and that's been working super well (given her tendency to jump after squirrels if they run across the sidewalk in front of us). Most dogs we can avoid a reaction with if we cross the street and I encourage her along with "leave it" and "let's go!" but there is a certain appearance of dogs that trigger a bigger reaction (border collies, Aussies, etc). She doesn't love skateboards or when we do any kind of 'flapping' - putting in a new trash bag, shaking out sheets, etc.
She has done great in our apartment! Like most things in and out of the house, she just needs a bit of assurance that the noise she's hearing isn't scary and she's safe. She barked a couple times the first day we had her when she heard people in the hallway, but now it doesn't bother her even a little bit. She loves running down our hallway between our bedrooms to say hi to us both, but loves it even more when everyone is all in one place. Lana also loves sniffing and playing outside, though, so she would definitely appreciate a yard!
This little angel has been in fosters in Texas for most of her life and is just waiting for a couch and people to call her own!
