PUPDATE 3
Kevin has been busy making big changes over the past 3 weeks. He is now potty trained! He wants to please and responds to wait, stay, sit, come, down, leave it, crate and most of the time no! Kevin is the best snuggler we’ve experienced. He loves to hang out with you and will sit next to you or go on his bed if you direct him. Kevin has played very nicely with the many toys he has discovered in our previous dog’s toy chest. We haven’t seen any destructive behavior with the toys.
At this time, Kevin is crated if left alone. He is very food driven and has taught his fosters that he can get into his food if it was not in a secured room. He knows when he has pushed the limit and looks forlorn after a firm no! He wants to please you at all times except when he is distracted outside like many dogs! Kevin has been walking using an easy walker harness and is showing improvement each day with less pulling.
He has been very happy to meet other dogs on our walks and never demonstrates any aggressive behavior. He has had play dates and does very well!
Kevin barks in response to unfamiliar sounds and at times when someone approaches him wearing a hood or has a certain build. It only happens occasionally and seems to be decreasing. He barks, but isn’t aggressive toward the person. It seems like uncertainty. We noticed that when my husband had his cell phone in front of him while standing, this did trigger woofing. Someone suggested that he may have had a bad experience with a bark collar in his past. He can be redirected immediately with play or distraction.
Kevin would thrive in a home with a yard and fence if possible. He loves to zoom around the yard! He would do best with an experienced owner and would benefit from training classes. We haven’t explored how he is with children but it appears he would be good with older children and possibly younger because he is so loving and gentle. He allows us to do almost anything with him without any resistance. We clean his feet before entering the house, take things out of his mouth, and with direction he waits for us to enter the house first.
HE IS A LOVER!!
PUPDATE 2
As we've gotten to know Kevin better, he's proved to be an uncomplicated dude. He likes life's simple pleasure: walks, food, and most of all cuddling with his humans.
Recently we dog sat a friend's young, high-energy Lab mix for the weekend. Kevin had a BLAST playing with her! Check out the videos here and here.
We had a full workup done on Kev to make sure there was no medical reason he was having accidents in the house. Everything came back clean, so it seems like he's just not potty trained! He's already made steps in housetraining in the few days we've been trying to train him. He wears doggy diapers in the house when we can't be watching him closely, and he doesn't mind wearing them at all!
PUPDATE 1
Say hello to Kevin! Kevin came to us all the way from Louisiana. We don’t know much about his back story, except that he was found attached to a 100-lb logging chain. Despite this, he’s a cheerful guy who just wants a family to shower with love!
Kevin is a medium-energy dog. He currently gets two 30-minute walks per day, but if you have to skip one, he won’t get so bored he chews the arm off your couch. He could also happily go for a longer walk or hike. Kev walks pretty well on a leash with a prong collar or no-pull harness. He loves to sniff and can get a little distracted by animals or people. We haven’t noticed any leash reactivity—he’ll watch and maybe pull towards other dogs as we walk by but he doesn’t bark or growl. He really enjoys walks, wrestling with other dogs, and playing fetch, but he also loves snuggling and napping. Snuggles might in fact be Kevin’s number one favorite thing! He’s happiest when he can be curled up next to you on the couch or the bed.
Kevin does quite well with other dogs. He loves to play and will play rough with other big dogs, but is gentle with smaller dogs. He also respects other dogs that don’t want to play—he currently lives with a grumpy older dog who doesn’t want anything to do with him, and he leaves her alone. He’s very friendly to almost all people we meet, inside the house or outside. He’ll bark when someone is at the door, but then he’s all kisses and tail wags as soon as they get inside. The only people we’ve noticed he seems to be scared of are big/tall people wearing hoods, some hats or some types of masks. He doesn’t show any fear-based aggression at all, he just wants to get away from them! He hasn’t had a ton of interaction with kids so I can’t speculate on how he would do with kids in the house. We haven't seen Kevin interact with any cats while he's been with us, but his previous foster reported that he was good with cats.
Really the only issue we’ve had with Kevin is his potty training. He supposedly came to us potty trained, but he’s had more accidents in the house than can be chalked up to just adjusting to a new schedule. He is crate trained and has never had any accidents in the crate. We’re working on a few things and we expect he should be much better soon!
Kevin is currently taking Doxycyline twice a day for 21 days after showing anaplasma antibodies on his 4DX test. This is our standard rescue protocol even though he is not showing any symptoms. He also has some thin patches on his coat and is being treated for possible allergies/skin infection.
Overall Kevin is SUCH a lover and is so excited to find a forever family!
P.S.: I promise he’s way cuter in person, he’s a big derp and is hard to get good pics of!
