Joe Dirt is a playful, silly, loveable doggo with the cutest, soft ears! He is always up for mental stimulation and fun - unless it's time for a cuddle session! He loves all toys and plays tug of war, fetch, flirt pole (think big cat toy) and would love to wrestle with the right dog or tolerant human. He has strong chompers and loves to destroy even the toughest stuffies. He is very food motivated, smart and trainable, and training is a great way to keep his big brain engaged. He also loves to snuffle feed or chase a puzzle ball around for most meals.
He came to us with a wonky left hip from an old injury; he is scheduled to have surgery in mid-December to correct this and prevent arthritis later in life. He is expected to be back to his jolly, playful self by early January. He does love medium to long walks, but would not be the best hiking partner at his current ability level. He loves swimming and water and running and will play rambunctiously; we have had to stop him after a while to prevent him from over-doing it given his injury. The hope is that these limitations will be reduced or gone after he recovers from surgery.
He has been very friendly towards dogs he has met, but his enthusiasm has overwhelmed some of them. I think he would benefit from a confident dog teaching him some social guidelines. He is polite and only mildly interested in other dogs and humans while on walks. He is too interested in our cat to be called "cat friendly" though he could possibly be counter-conditioned to do well with a confident cat. He has not had close contact with children, but because he doesn't know his size and has trouble regulating his excitement levels, I would be cautious with introducing him to children.
He loves to lie next to me on the couch chewing on a toy, and loves belly rubs, especially first thing in the morning. He sleeps with us in bed for part of the night, then usually chooses to move to our couch before coming back to the bed in the early morning. We have let him free roam without incident, but he is also very good in his crate both during the work day and through the night when we have tried this. Joe Dirt is an absolute sweetheart of a dog, who will play, cuddle and army crawl his way into your heart (and bed if you let him)!
