Updates
PUPDATE 4
Hobbes is doing great with his potty training with the schedule we stick to - no accidents for a couple of weeks! He also sleeps through the night fine and doesn’t need any potty breaks.
PUPDATE 3
Hobbes is continuing to become more confident by the day and displays a goofy personality and love of being around his people. He's becoming a fetch expert! He loves chasing the tennis ball and bringing it back - we are still working on the letting go part. He also loves when there is another dog in the play area for him to race to the ball.
While we are on walks, we are working on him staying on one side of me and not crossing in front of me whenever he smells something delicious. He also has a tendency to want to put trash, plants and the occasional wood chip in his mouth so I have to steer him away from things like that.
He is still crated whenever I leave (hasn't been for much longer than 2 hours at a time) and he doesn't seem to bark as much but still pulls blankets into the crate with him. I usually leave British Bake Off on the tv when I leave to block out hallway noises as well as a frozen peanut butter kong.
Hobbes will be so excited to meet his forever family and exceed all cuddle expectations!
PUPDATE 2
-Hobbes met several young kids at the pack walk today and did great with them! (As I expected he would)
-We went to the Fetch 5k and he did amazing with the number of people and dogs that came up to him. He was able to reunite with his brother Calvin as well!
-He has not shown any signs of nervousness around people on walks anymore
-Continues to do great with his house training- no recent indoor accidents.
PUPDATE 1
A typical day for Hobbes starts early as he is still a puppy and needs to go outside to potty immediately after waking up (around 6:30-7 am). He has been sleeping through the night as long as he goes out to potty late enough the night before (9:30-10 pm ish). He will whine a bit in his crate if he needs to go outside during the night and takes care of it as soon as we get outside. We usually go for a longer walk after breakfast and before I start work.
Since I work from home, Hobbes gets frequent trips outside. We’ve been going out every 3-4 hours and he hasn't had an accident indoors recently. He has his “spot” and he knows exactly where it is outside. He has been more excited about walks recently and loves to stop and explore the new smells around the neighborhood. Our longest walk has been close to 3 miles (with a water/ice cream stop in the middle!) so I would think he would be a fan of longer walks as he gets older.
When he is inside, he’s good at entertaining himself by throwing toys into the air and running after them (particularly a tennis ball), or chewing on his beef cheek roll chew, of which he is becoming an expert. He naps quite a bit during the day while I work as well – he’s very fond of his Kirkland brand pillow. You’ll often find him sprawled out on his back on this pillow throughout the day.
He is a quick learner and after a couple days of corrections, he has stopped counter-surfing and picking up shoes to take back to his pillow. We’re currently working on using bells to let me know that he needs to go outside (I think he is close to picking up on this trick!). He is very food motivated and picked up on “sit” very quickly. He sits before getting treats and his meals. He also gets treats for going potty outside, which he’s becoming much more consistent at doing. After dinner (5:30-6:30 or so) Hobbes is most likely to want to play a bit more. He starts getting more tired by 8:30-9, but I try to take him out around 10 pm before bed.
Hobbes can be a bit shy and nervous about (certain) strangers on walks, but he is improving and most of the time he will approach people for pets and likes getting his ears scratched. He has met a lot of people since arriving here – most people want to say hi to him because he’s so cute! He will love to curl up next to you on the couch and greet anyone who comes into your home. He has not had exposure to children while I’ve been fostering him.
Hobbes can be very chill inside but a couple times a day he will get a burst of energy and want to chase all of his toys. He has been more excited about walks recently and will try to stop to smell everything while we’re outside. He walks well on a leash for being so young – he doesn’t pull much so the only part he needs to practice more is walking in a straight line. He likes to stop right in front of me or crisscross the sidewalk in front of me. He seems to be medium to high energy and would probably love a place to run around – we have gone off-leash in a fenced in dog area outside my building but he hasn’t really run around much in there because he’s more interested in sniffing things.
Hobbes is always willing to say hi to other dogs – because he’s still a puppy and likes to lick the dogs that he meets, this doesn’t always go over well with older dogs. He has made a friend similar in age to him and they played great together for a couple of hours. He is not reactive on leash when he gets barked or growled at – he will just look at the other dog or keep walking.
He has had little interaction with cats, but he did meet a cat at a pet store and casually sniffed him and then walked away. He seemed fairly indifferent to the cat. He does show an interest in chasing squirrels while we are out on walks though.
Hobbes has been working on being left alone and crated. He does bark when I leave, but usually has stopped barking when I get back. He is typically left with a frozen peanut butter Kong and a variety of toys. He tends to pull blankets into the crate while I’m gone and one time chewed up a towel, so he seems to at least keep busy while I'm gone. He has not been left to free roam while I’m gone since he is still a puppy and could get into trouble. He learned apartment rules quickly so I’m less concerned about him chewing on non-toys by now. He will grab at a pillow sometimes if he’s in his “play mode.”
Hobbes is such a good pup, loves to cuddle and get belly rubs and explore the great outdoors. He would make a great addition to any family who is looking for a cute and excitable family member!
