Adopted on April 13th!
Ellie Mae is such a sweet girl and has been an easy foster from the start. She came from a home in Texas with two other dogs who had to be surrendered when their dad passed away. She settled in very quickly with my resident dog and other foster dog. We all get up around 6:30 a.m. and she goes outside to do her business before coming in for breakfast. I feed the dogs separately to avoid issues. Sometimes Ellie insists I sit by her while she eats her special diet of weight management food. The vet says she is about 10 pounds overweight so we’re working on lowering her caloric intake and increasing her activity. Luckily she loves to run and play with the other dogs and we go on daily walks so I think she’s on the right track.
When it’s time for me to go to work, Ellie goes in her crate pretty easily with a little treat placed toward the back of the crate. I have a dog cam in the room with her and she appears to just lay around and sleep in the crate the whole day while I’m gone. I’ll hear her whine quietly if I put her in the crate and don’t leave right away, but once I’m gone, she’s quiet.
When I return home, she goes outside again to do her business and run around and play with the dogs. We usually go on a walk at that point before eating dinner. The rest of the night is filled with playing with the dogs, chewing on hard toys or tennis balls, playing outside if the weather is nice, and playing with my young, dog-friendly cat. Ellie will play forever with the kitty! She’s gentler with him than the other dogs are.
Ellie would be amazing with a beginner dog owner and could definitely live in an apartment. She’s great with other dogs and cats, meeting new people, and even gentle with kids! Her main goal in life is to get as many pets and belly rubs as possible and she sees people of all ages as an opportunity to get that attention. She’s also a big snuggle bug. Ellie walks well on leash and rides great in the car. She’s had no accidents in my house. Overall, I’d say she’s a medium energy dog because she will get the zoomies when playing with other dogs outside or in the house, but is just as happy to settle on the couch for a long nap. She has chewed on/eaten non-toys, so definitely keep things off the floor that you don’t want her chewing on. It doesn’t help that she works together with my cat who loves knocking anything and everything off tabletops and countertops for her to nibble on.
Ellie Mae was positive for Lyme in early April but is currently not showing any clinical signs that I’ve seen. According to the vet, a positive result for Lyme on 4DX test just indicates antibodies to this bacteria, not necessarily active infection. However, because Ellie Mae is preparing to go up for adoption, in order to avoid the potential for adopting out a dog that may show signs of this disease later, she is being given a round of Doxycycline for 28 days. Adopters should be aware that future 4DX tests may be positive for Lyme due to persistence of antibodies despite treatment; this does not indicate the need for further treatment for this condition unless Ellie is showing signs consistent with this disease (fever, lethargy, inappetence, joint pain, consistent bloodwork abnormalities, enlarged lymph nodes, etc). Remainder of 4DX was negative for heartworm disease and remaining tick borne disease.
Overall, Ellie Mae has been one of my easiest fosters. Whoever adopts her is going to get an easy-going love bug seeking all the pets and belly rubs she can find!
