Updates

Out of his crate at 6am, Dexter goes outside with my other dog to go potty. He comes in and waits with increasing impatience and vocalization for breakfast. He has breakfast in his crate. Once the dogs finish eating, Dexter hangs out with me and my resident dog - I work from home and sometimes I have to put him back in the crate for a break. We go for a pack walk around noon along with playtime in the back yard. Then more hanging out in the afternoon and usually some training, including sit, down, wait, and leave it. He has several potty breaks during the day, then has supper just like breakfast. In the evening, we hang out and play until it’s time for him to go to bed in his crate at 10.

Dexter wants cuddles, playtime, and either to jump all over you or to curl up next to you. He knows he's not supposed to jump on people, but he doesn't think it's ALL the time. On walks he is curious and happily excited about other people and wants to jump on them and kiss them.

He has not had exposure to children while I’ve been fostering him, but he was recently with a dog sitter who said he did well with her children.

Dexter needs plenty of exercise - dog parks where he can run, or playdates with an energetic dog would be ideal. I think he would excel at fetch games as well. On a leash he tends to pull but is learning not to. He get's very excited, but not aggressive, towards other dogs on leash.

He gets along well with my older coonhound inside and outside, including sometimes napping with him. He shows some minor dominance but backs off easily. He has played intensely, but non-aggressively, with a smaller high energy neighbor dog in the back yard.

Dexter has not had exposure to cats while in my care.

I always crate him when I leave the house. I would not give him free run of the house. He cries in the crate when I leave, and if I'm not gone long he will still be crying when I come back. If I'm gone 3-4 hours he usually falls asleep.

Dexter needs Kongs for play - he chewed through a supposedly un-chewable nylon toy. He needs to be watched for what he finds to chew on - mostly he doesn't swallow, but it's a concern.

While Dexter is a high-energy boy who can sometimes get in trouble with chewing and jumping, he is very easy to train because he wants to please PLUS he is treat motivated. I think taking him to good training classes would help Dexter and his new family bond and learn some good manners as he grows up.
