Updates
Meet Chachi (or Chachke or ShotSki!), who perks up that left ear to all those names! Chachi wakes up with a big yawn around 6am, but he is content to rest on his bed or any soft surface you provide until you get up. Currently, his favorite place is the couch, although he has been invited to snooze in bed on occasion. Chachi eats right on cue at 7:30 and 6ish and then out in the yard to explore then enjoys(?) a walk around the block, although he doesn’t seem to balk at going on longer walks with the resident dog.
Despite the fact that Chachi was abandoned and lived outside for 2 years on his own, he has NEVER lifted that tiny leg in our home, even on longer 9 hour days. From day one he has never pottied in the house.
Initially he was crated, but after we had to coax him out, we shut the crate door and he is not destructive when left out in the house. After we come home from work, he hops off the couch to do his business, then back in to have dinner and after another walk around the block, hops back up on the couch. Was it mentioned he just loves hanging out on the couch during the day? Yet…Chachi seems to perk up at night to surprisingly run very fast, to play chase and yes, wrestle with our resident dog who is about 70 pounds.
Chachi isn’t the most confident fella out in the big world, but as he feels loved, protected, and most importantly, as he gains more exposure, his comfort in these new environments will likely improve. As you get to know Chachi, you will realize his left ear is his emotional barometer and shows you how Chachi seems to be feeling.
Last week when we visited a busy pet store to have his nails trimmed, he interacted appropriately and in a friendly manner with all the other dogs and people. When he was engaged with other dogs or his handler, he seemed comfortable. Looking around that big store, if he stopped, his little legs would shake a bit, and Left Ear was straight up and swiveled all around, keeping watch.
When Chachi came up for Fetch’s initial vetting, it was recommended he have an x-ray to rule out a thickening in his stifle (knee). After having a full set of x-rays, it was found his left femur rotates out a bit more than the right. The veterinarian didn’t find any concerning issues with his hips or knees. While the vet was not concerned about his femur, they recommend all “long dogs” like dachshunds avoid jumping off couches, beds and use a step to avoid back strains. Joint supplements could also be helpful for his activity long term.
Chachi’s ideal home has a couch, a loving human or more who provides simple challenges to allow him to gain confidence walking the world. Another dog would be a plus, but not necessary. Another dog may be a playmate, a model of what’s expected, and show him how good life can be here in Wisconsin! His new home would provide exercise with fun in the yard or walks a couple times a day. He also is starting to enjoy long hikes in the woods!
Chachi has met several new human friends in his Wisconsin foster home. He is initially a little timid and will hang back but gets curious and will approach for pets after a bit. He hasn’t been around children yet, but our plans are to have him interact with some kiddos soon. Chachi has been around our cat, and initially ignored her, until our dog taught him to chase her. The cat hasn’t tempted another interaction with him since. We think he would be ok with a cat, but might need some initial supervision and boundary setting.
He hasn’t been exposed to downtown living yet, so we are unable to provide insight into whether traffic/cars would be too much of a challenge for him at this time. If you are in the market for a dog who does Cross Fit, runs a morning 5K, rises at the crack of dawn, and doesn’t like soft furniture please pass to the next Fetch Pup! :) However, if you are looking for a dog who will welcome you home (after) your CrossFit workout, keep watch over your recovery drink (after) your 5K, hang with you playing Frisbee Golf, and who loves a late night backyard fire with friends, ping Chachi…he’s your dog.
