Buzz is a senior West Highland White Terrier mix who found himself in the shelter when his owner went into the hospital. He’s definitely an old man, with some stiff joints, the beginnings of cataracts and a bit of hearing loss. Despite this, he’s a happy little guy who has a lot of love to give. It’s always tough to get senior dogs adopted, but I’m hoping that a special person will be willing to open their heart and home to this special guy.
Buzz sleeps quietly in his crate all night and wakes up eager to go outside, do his potties and eat breakfast. I have a full flight of stairs off the deck and he goes up and down those no problem, although he does have a little bit of arthritis in his legs and walks a little stiffly. He loves his food and then will putter around a bit and then go back to sleep. He spends most of the day sleeping. He has doggy steps to get up to the couch and he loves to climb up and snuggle with you. He likes to go for trail walks and will go for 1-2 miles without a problem, although he’s also happy to snooze at home all day. Buzz does have to potty frequently which is typical of older dogs. He can go 10 hours at night in his crate without a potty break. During the day, he will start to bark if left in his crate more than about 4 hours because he needs to pee. When free roaming during the day and evening, he will pee as often as every 1-2 hours. He wears a belly band when indoors in case of accidents and usually has 1 or 2 pees in his belly band per day. He has never had a poop accident.
Buzz lives with several other dogs and sometimes will make brief attempts at playing with them, but mostly ignores them. He also ignores cats. He is very friendly with people and will go up to anyone and wag his tail for pets. He likes to chew on rawhides and occasionally chase after a squeaky toy, but it’s always pretty short lived and then he just wants to cuddle.
Buzz can see pretty well indoors but he will squint when outside in bright sunlight, probably because of his cataracts. He still has no trouble seeing me across the yard and trotting over to get pets. If I don’t notice him he will paw at me gently until I pay attention to him. I wonder if he is a bit older than his estimated 12 years. He was shaved in the shelter but is getting scruffy again now that his hair is growing out. He is nonshedding and will need regular haircuts. He is a very sweet boy!
