If you love napping or having a furry little polar bear laying by your feet most of the day, then Boots is the pup for you! Boots currently sleeps in his foster moms bed, and wakes up at 6:30am for pets and snuggles before heading outside for potty time. He comes inside for food and water and goes back out for some play time and potty time about 15 minutes after finishing eating. After coming back inside, Boots will play with toys or his canine foster brothers for a little bit. Then it's nap time. Nap time essentially lasts all day, with little bouts of play here and there. He'll get a spurt of energy for about 15 or 20 minutes and want to play, and then resume napping. Seriously, if napping were a sport for dogs, Boots would win the gold! He enjoys sprawling out on the floor near his people, whether it be under a desk, under a chair, or under your legs! There are several potty trips outside during the daytime, too. Around 5:30pm it's dinner! Dinner is followed up with more outside time to play and potty. Once we come inside, Boots is back to his favorite activity - napping. He gets one or two more spurts of play energy between 6 and 9pm. He goes outside again around 10pm and then its off to bed! He likes sleeping in a cozy bed with his foster mom, but prefers to sprawl out rather than cuddle. He sleeps through the night without any potty issues.
Boots has never met a person he doesn't like! As far as he's concerned, more people means more treats and pets. He's curious about new people and timid when approaching them, but once he confirms they are ok, he's all butt wiggles and belly rubs. When in the yard, he'll see people walk past and watches them, interested in what they are doing, but generally goes back to playing or pottying pretty quickly.
Boots thinks children are interesting and often taste yummy when he licks their faces or hands. He's been around children as young as 6 and does well with them! He's a gently pup and handles being pet, held, and picked up by children really well. He's not much of a 'jumper' (unless he thinks you have treats and are holding out on him) so kids like him a bit more because they don't worry about getting knocked down.
Boots has fairly low energy for a puppy. Most of his time is spent napping. His spurts of puppy play energy last about 20 minutes and then he's back to napping. When he has play energy, he'll play with and bark at his toys, or play with his canine foster brother - games of chase and tug are especially enjoyable for him. He hasn't gone on walks, or used a leash other than at the vet. But he has reacted well to being on a tether outside. He L.O.V.E.S snow! If there is any snow on the ground, he will gravitate to it to dig and lay down in.
Boots is being fostered with a 9 year old German Shepherd/Lab mix and an 18 month old Terrier Mix. He has done well assimilating into their pack and loves to play with the Terrier mix pup. They play games of chase and tug. Boots is very good at voicing when he is done with play time so the other dog leaves him be. He's also very gentle with our 'grandpa' dog, the German Shepherd/Lab mix. Boots knows he doesn't like to play and leaves him be. He's good at picking up social cues from other dogs and adjusting his approach accordingly. He hasn't met any other dogs with the exception of his siblings. But in general he seems to be interested in dogs outside, but not reactive.
Boots has had no exposure to cats.
As he's a puppy, Boots should be crated if being left alone, or at least kept to a gated area that is clean of any non-toy items he could chew up. As he gets older I'm confident he'll be able to free roam when his people aren't present, as he'll most likely spend the time napping. He certainly likes to be where his people are, and doesn't like being separated. He will walk with you, sometimes getting underfoot and will find what room you are in and that's where he'll find a spot to sprawl out and nap. If you leave that room for another, he'll wake up and follow you. He's definitely a social pup!
Boots is an absolute sweetheart, and the most mellow and laid back pup I've ever seen! Because of his breed, his coat is thick and he can get hot very easily, so having access to water and cool areas, such as wooded or tiled floors, will be very important. Because he likes being near his people, he'd do well in a house where someone is present most of the time. He'd also do really well somewhere with a yard that he can be left out in, whether fenced in, on a tether, or invisible fence. He's mastered 'sit' and we are working on 'come' and 'shake' commands using treats. He is VERY food motivated! He will grow into a big, sweet, fluffy boy!
