Arlo goes through life marching to the beat of his own drum. He’s quirky, spontaneous, and is oftentimes a goof. He loves to be outside and respects boundaries, he’s quiet outside and doesn’t get bothered by cars, dogs, cats, people, other animals—but he will eat things he shouldn’t if not monitored well (mushrooms, rocks, poop). When he’s in the mood he will want to play fetch with you using a stick and only a stick. If he’s not in the mood to play he will want to chew the stick leisurely in the yard.

He loves going for adventures that include hiking and swimming and runs excitedly to the car for the ride, his excitement will last awhile as he will vocalize in the car until he settles down. His leash manners could use some work but does alright with a harness and muzzle on solo walks.

He doesn’t tolerate young children well, he’d do better with a family who has older kids (12 and up) who understand the concept of personal space. He’s not big on snuggling humans but will decide to on occasion. He tends to get upset with too much movement and will get off the bed. He will take head and armpit scratches anytime you’re willing to give them!

Indoors, Arlo prefers his own space (crate, room, dog bed, etc). He will often find cozy places to den under including the bed! Which for a big boy can be a challenge to get him back out without having to lift the entire bed. He enjoys spending time with his lick mat, kong toys, and Nyla bones. He will often speak his mind when he wants to go outside and hears a disturbance outside (car door).  He can be safely left home alone for about 6-7 hours crated. Arlo is not fearful of thunderstorms or fireworks but is fearful of the smoke detector and stairs. Since Arlo has a fear of stairs he would be best in a home without, or with someone willing to put in a lot of training to condition him to using stairs confidently.

Arlo takes daily behavioral medication that should be up-kept with his new owner. Arlo has a tendency to get reactive towards his humans and other dogs when things are unpredictable or it involves something he doesn’t like. He has a tendency to be dog selective but has lived with other dogs when introduced properly and the right structures are in place. He plays well when he likes the dog, if he doesn’t he will growl and snarl.  Otherwise, he’s got a clean bill of health and lots of life left to live with the right family.

He is not the most suitable pet for a first time owner. He needs steady grooming (which he tolerates at home or the groomers). He requires someone who is vigilant, has dog experience and is willing to provide structure to work through his behaviors with him.
