Updates

Shadow is happy to announce she was officially adopted on September 10, 2020!

Shadow was rescued from a hoarding case in the south along with her litter of pups. The conditions there were less than ideal but she hasn’t allowed that experience to get her down. Now that she has raised her puppies, she’s ready to start the next chapter of her life in Wisconsin!

Shadow is just a lovely girl and has a mellow and easy going disposition. She’s been sweet and friendly with everyone she’s met here so far. She lives with my 9 year old son and has been very comfortable around him from the start. She gets excited to greet him in the mornings. I haven’t had the opportunity to observe her around younger kids. Shadow loves to be around her people and included in things. Despite her size, she believes she’s a lap dog and will climb up on the couch and snuggle close if allowed.

Shadow is excellent with other animals. She lives with two small dogs. Even though there is a big size difference, she plays really well and doesn’t trample them. She loves attention so much that if the other dogs are getting that, she will push her way in but she isn’t snippy about it. I’m working on making her wait her turn and being more polite in those situations. They all play with the same toys and she hasn’t shown any resource guarding. She also lives with a cat and there’s been no issues. After a sniff and a friendly tail wag from Shadow, she mostly ignores the cat.

I don’t think Shadow has had the experience of going on walks before arriving here but has been getting the hang of it. If she sees people or other dogs on walks, she stops and seems unsure about passing them. She seems to prefer strolls around the neighborhood with plenty of time to sniff and investigate. We got caught in the rain once and had to jog back and it took quite a bit of encouragement to get her to pick up the pace. She’s medium energy overall. A walk every day or playtime with dogs seems sufficient as she also spends a good amount of time relaxing. She also really likes toys and will play and chew on them independently.

Shadow goes in a crate with a treat easily and sleeps in a crate by my bed quietly throughout the night. She will sleep in until whenever I’m ready to get up in the morning. She is also crated when left alone but has exhibited some separation anxiety. This is an area Shadow will need continued help with. She barks pretty continuously when left alone so probably wouldn’t be the best fit for apartment living right now. She hasn’t tried to break out of the crate or destroyed any bedding.

Shadow seems to be pretty well potty trained. She’s had no accidents in my home. One thing I have noticed is she won’t do her business on leash. She needs a bit of space and privacy so a fenced in yard or tie out would be ideal.

Shadow is just a wonderful girl and will make a loving and loyal companion!
