Riley is an 8-year-old, 90-pound labradoodle who is a gentle giant and an easy-going dog. He has passed 3 obedience training classes and can do all the basic commands, but he will only obey if a treat is involved! Honestly, he will do anything for a treat. He has full range of the house when we are gone and does not chew or tear things. He usually lays around during the day, on his dog bed, the couch, or a chair. He has never been interested in dog toys, but he will play fetch if treats are offered.
Riley loves going on walks, which happens daily. We use a gentle lead since he is so big and will sometimes pull if he gets excited by another dog. His dog trainer recommended using the gentle lead when he was 2, and we have used it ever since.
Riley has been around a lot of other dogs when he goes to a sitter or when a family member visits with a pet. When he first meets a dog, he will almost always try to hump them. He stops when he gets barked at or when we intervene, and after that, he is submissive. He has never growled at or tried to bite another animal or any human. We have always had excellent reports from dog sitters. One time he stayed with 5 great danes!
Riley is good with children and has spent a lot of time around our grandchildren, ages 1 and 2. He is also good around senior citizens and has visited an assisted living facility a few times. He does best when children approach him calmly. He will bark when he hears someone at the door, but stops when we open the door, then he wags his tail and welcomes everyone.
Riley does not shed, which is wonderful! However, when he was about 2, he had a bad experience with a groomer, and ever since then, he has needed sedated grooms. He is fine with a garden hose bath, but cannot tolerate being brushed or clipped. He will need a sedated groom 2 or 3 times per year, otherwise his fur gets matted. He was just groomed in October, so he is good for a few months. Helpful tip: when he gets groomed, we have them give him any vaccinations or blood tests that are due to prevent interim visits between grooms.
The ideal home for Riley:
Fenced yard or someone who will walk him daily.
Patient adopters who understand dog behaviors and know what he needs if he tries to hump or gets too excited.
He will do well in a household with or without children, but because he is so big, he should be supervised around children until they know each other well.
