Mercedes has an irrepressible joy and so much love to give!
She would thrive in a home with active people who play with her and take her along on their adventures. She’s a medium to high energy dog and needs daily physical and mental exercise to be at her best.
Mercedes is fully house trained and arrived knowing her name and “sit.” She’s learning “wait” and “look”. Her loose leash walking is really coming along, and she’s fun to take for walks or hiking. This girl is treat motivated and so eager to please, she visibly preens when you praise her.
She loves toys—literally to death. She’s a very strong chewer and has to be supervised with them. She really loves playing tug, and to chase after balls and toys when they’re thrown. She’ll even toss toys to herself which is so cute! Occasionally she’ll bring them back, but mostly she likes to whiz past you with them!
After her adventures, Mercedes is a super snuggler. She’ll dive under throw blankets and lay across people’s legs, lap or feet.
When she has to be left alone, she settles into her crate. She sometimes whines a little at first, but settles quickly. She’ll sleep or rest quietly for hours, but can get restless and vocal after 5 or 6 hours.
Mercedes could probably do well in a variety of households. She’s done great in a condo and rarely barks, so an apartment would be ok if her exercise needs are met and she isn’t crated past her threshold. A fenced yard would be awesome though for her to get out her zoomies. She’s also the only dog in her foster home and loving all the attention. Her rambunctiousness would make her a bad fit for a home with small children or senior dogs.
Mercedes is SO ecstatic to be out of the shelter and in a home with people again that she literally can’t contain herself sometimes! Some things we’ve noticed and are working on:
- Jumping on people when she’s excited.
- She gives LOTS of kisses. Would literally shower you with affection if you let her. It has gotten much better, but she still gets these manic “love surges” at random times.
- She may get a little mouthy when she’s wanting to play with you. This has already improved dramatically.
- On leash, she does pull toward people, dogs and squirrels. Carrying treats and rewarding her for being calm and redirecting her attention to her handler is working well.
- She is so outgoing and eager to meet every person and dog she sees. At the moment though, this quickly tips over to her being hyper, overstimulated and socially inappropriate with both dogs and humans.
For all of the above, time and positive training will make a world of difference. She has a lovely, playful disposition and has made so much progress already. Mercedes is learning quickly that she doesn’t need to clamor for attention anymore, and she’s a more relaxed and confident girl every day.
