The lovely Margot found her people on September 16, 2020!
Margot is a very special dog who is now looking for a very special family. She's been through a lot in the past 9 months+ and is ready to find a family who will absolutely pamper her for the rest of her days. Read on to hear more of her difficult and resilient journey!
Margot was first rescued from a very small, ill equipped shelter near Dallas, TX in mid-January of this year. She was very thin and riddled with injuries/illness at the time. Our partner rescue, Pets Going Places, pulled her from that shelter and got her in a foster home down in Texas to start her recovery. At first, Margot would not walk or move much and had to be carried into her initial vet visits. Initial treatments helped her with some skin infections and injuries to her feet. Infections on her toes were so deep they were infecting her bones! She also tested positive for heartworm but needed to heal from other illnesses before she could be treated. During treatment of her toes, she was hospitalized for fluid accumulating in her chest and had some great care from the emergency care providers during that time. Finally, her chest fluid accumulation and feet were cleared up in March/April and she was able to begin heartworm treatment and activity restrictions over the coming months. Margot was healthy enough post heartworm treatment to finally come to WI in August and healthy enough to be spayed at the beginning of September.
Margot was in pretty rough shape when she was first rescued from the shelter down in Texas and had clearly not been living a good life prior to making it to the shelter down there. She has always been a very gentle girl, but also has some nervousness with strangers and new places due to her past life. She will tend to bark (and she barks loud) when someone first comes in our space. She’ll circle around them and bark a bit, but if they offer a treat and kind words she warms up. She stays a bit skittish for a while and will bark occasionally but as long as the person is friendly and confident, she is quickly loving on them. She thrives with gentle language and lots of love and attention and will always ask for more pets by nudging hands - even with strangers. Thanks to the unending patience and care from her foster mom in Texas who would lay by her at night to make sure Margot was still breathing, all of the vets she's seen throughout her care who taught her that humans were here to help her, and the various rescue workers who saved her from whatever life she was living prior to rescue, she has grown to be a very loving, playful, snuggly, resilient, and HEALTHY girl. She really is such a lover when you get to know her…she just wants to be petted and loved on and snuggled...something she definitely missed out on early in her life!!
Margot is a medium energy overall and absolutely loves going for long walks or hikes. She gets very excited once she can tell it's walk time and will go on as many walks as she can get. It has taken her a few weeks to get really comfortable in my home and come out of her shell, but she loves to play with toys now too. She loves to tear out the fluff and kill the squeakers. She collects her babies in some of her favorite spaces; the couch, her bed, the rug in my office. Sometimes she just carries them around, or piles them up, or settles in for a de-fluffing session. But regardless, she loves them.
Margot does well with other dogs and has lived with several in both of her foster homes. She needs slow intros to get along best and will growl a little at first with particularly rambunctious/annoying dogs. She completely ignores the cats so would do well there too. Margot has met both babies and small children with me but only for a couple hours each. She did very well with both though in those short instances. Margot also went to a cookout with lots of people and did reasonably well. She would go around for pets from everyone and just sat behind me when she got overwhelmed.
Margot does pretty well when left alone though does have some minor separation anxiety. She has done okay in her crate though would need continued practice with this. She will not bark in her crate but does bark and cry a little at first when left alone free roaming. She has never had an accident with me or been destructive if left free roaming on her own. Currently, Margot sleeps free roaming in the living room, though I have also had her sleep overnight in her crate. She gets one meal a day at bedtime right now and has minor possessiveness over her food with the other dogs so we feed separately just in case. She is allowed on furniture with me. Margot does have a LOT of hair so adopters would need to be okay with shedding and very regular brushing/grooming.
Overall, Margot is a very loving dog and is going to make one very lucky family extremely happy. She has quite the following of people rooting for her who have been watching her recovery journey since January so a family open to providing updates on how Margot is doing here and there is a big plus. :) If you've got a big heart and have plenty of gentle love to give, consider getting on the waiting list to meet her!
