PUPDATE 2
Hi, Leia here!
I love to play fetch and tug, chew my toys, and run around the yard at the speed of light! My foster people say I am improving on a leash. They also say I am really smart, as I have already learned “sit” and am really close to learning “stay” and “come.” I’m also working on learning “take it” “drop it” and “search” (find the hidden treat). I have a really good nose, and I can sniff out any treat you hide. I still like to bark at other dogs and people (from my house and yard, but not on walks), but am getting much better and am easily corrected with a distraction (treat). I am continuing to do well with the resident dog, and have learned when I should respect her boundaries.
I can’t wait to meet my forever people!
PUPDATE 1
Leia wakes up around 6:30 a.m. and goes outside to do her business. She usually chills and snuggles for a bit after that and eventually gets around to eating her food mid-morning. We then go for a short walk around the neighborhood, followed by more snuggling and inside time. Leia eats dinner around 6:00 p.m., followed by another short evening walk. She lounges and snuggles again until bedtime, and then sleeps in her crate until morning.
Like her namesake, Leia is sweet, smart, devoted, and regal. She loves her humans and wants to be near them. She does alright when out of the house on walks and with brief encounters with human and canine neighbors. She can sometimes bark and growl softly at people walking nearby out our window and when out on walks. We are working with her on this behavior. Slow introductions work well for Leia, and she generally warms up to both people and dogs after a few minutes.
We have four children, ages 6, 6, 8 and 10 in our home, and Leia does well with each of them. She loves snuggles, pets, playing fetch or tug, and being outside with them. She can be a bit jumpy or mouthy at times but is easily redirected.
Leia is moderately energetic. She likes to play in the backyard and goes for two short walks (1-2 miles) per day. Leia is an interesting dog to walk. She needs some treats and coaxing to get going but is usually fine once we're about half a block away from our house, prancing along happily. When her nose is pointed homeward, she tends to pull on the leash since she knows we're heading home. She has a great sense of direction!
She was initially an only dog, but was introduced to our new adoptee after a week or so with us. Leia was at first threatened by this and did some barking and growling when she noticed there was another dog in the home (we tried to keep them apart for the first day). After a slow and controlled introduction (both dogs leashed, walks together outside with one dog following the other, then switching, and lots of treats and positive energy), she is doing very well with our much older and smaller adopted dog. She could do well with other dogs if given a slow introduction and lots of positive reinforcement.
Leia has not been exposed to cats while in our care.
Leia has not been left alone for long periods of time. When crated, she initially whines a bit and then settles down. She is always crated at night and sometimes for brief periods during the day. We are continuing to work with Leia on crate comfort and being alone.
If you're looking for a sweet, cuddly homebody, Leia is your girl! Although she is still a puppy, Leia is a bit of an old soul and can't be bothered with most puppy shenanigans. She does not chew on things she shouldn't and could probably be left to roam unsupervised. She needs slow introductions to new people and pets but adjusts well if given time and lots of positive reinforcement.
