Hello! I’m Hat Trick—a sweet, resilient, medium-to-high energy Southern tripod from Louisiana. A superpower of mine is being able to adapt to new environments quickly. After losing my back left leg before coming to Wisconsin, I’ve had to adjust to this whole new world with my tri-pawed status.
My Strengths: My fosters tell me that I am a good listener—I take direction with food incentives very easily! I’m a top notch cuddler who is completely crate trained and house broken. All you have to do is say “crate” or tap on it, and I walk inside. When I’m there, I will nap or sleep quietly through the night. I’m also completely potty trained and have developed clear signals for letting my people know that I have to do my business. I would also be ok free roaming the house, as I don’t counter surf or chew on non-toy items. Additionally, I’m a great work from home companion and (after receiving my short morning walk or yard frolic time) wait patiently for my humans to finish their work meetings. I love people, car rides, and am a complete pro at playing fetch with my foster parents. I drop the ball easily and play nicely with my foster sister and brother.
I am actively Working on: Leash manners (not pulling) and some occasional leash reactivity toward other dogs who are close by when I’m feeling overstimulated. If other dogs bark from far away and I’m alert and interested, but I am easily redirected. If there are other dogs in the home, I am protective of my food bowl when it’s feeding time but do share my toys. I continue to get exposure to cats, and sometimes need to be reminded not to stare at them. I also sometimes gently use my mouth to play with humans (aka, I can be “mouthy”), and am able to be redirected with a toy or a firm “no”. Continued training and a stable home environment will allow me to thrive and work on these things.
Hat Trick’s Needs from Foster parents’ perspectives: Hat Trick loves his humans! He is smart and attentive and would love a family who is excited to spend time with him and continue teaching him new commands. His ideal owner would be somebody who is able to help him get regular short bursts of movement (ideally between 10-20 minutes at least twice daily via walk, fetch or running around with other dogs). Don’t let his tri-pawed status fool you – he does love to be active and would benefit from continued physical activity to keep his joints in good condition.
