QUICK FACTS: ✔️ Good with other dogs! 👶Best with older kids 🧸 Loves to play 🥰 Snuggle Pup 😀 Friendly 🫣 Shy at first
Gigi Hawkins landed in my care by way of friends who were on their way to Starbucks on a Saturday morning in south Louisiana when they saw a “skinny black cat” shaking on the side of a busy road.
The cat turned out to be an underweight little black dog with the best ears! Gigi had recently weaned puppies. Sadly, we don’t know where her puppies ended up or anything about her history, but you could tell she’d been out on her own awhile. She was suffering from mastitis and clearly starving—skin and bones. Despite all of this, Gigi greeted me with a tail wag and licked my hands when I went to pick her up. I knew then she had a lot of love in her.
Gigi is currently in a home with a 6 year old catahoula mix and a small parrot. She absolutely loves other dogs and has really looked up mine. It took her almost 2 weeks to have an accident inside. And it was only because she gets excited when she plays and tends to guzzle too much water and then forgets the potty outside rule.
She is skittish, still learning new day-to-day sounds in the home. Favorite activities include chewing on bones, snuggling, chasing my dog in the backyard, and did I mention chewing on bones? She is playful, loving, and incredibly resilient. She does best in a kennel if another dog is there to comfort her. Mine stands next to her kennel until she settles. I always give her a frozen kong and that helps too! She’s still learning. She can be left loose at night in the house—she will likely be in your bed snug against you.
Once you are in her circle of trust, she will lick you to death and that tail doesn’t stop! She met a cat once. Reaction seemed fine but no other exposure.
Has met older kids and loved them. Little kids came to pet her and she was like ummm what are these? Lol very nervous...so younger kids seem to freak her out a little with all the quick movements but she’s only had one interaction. Gigi is a wonderful little house guest! One of the easiest fosters I’ve had!
UPDATE; What's on Gigi's Christmas list this year? To find her forever, loving home, filled with a warm bed, plenty of toys, chews, and treats! After being found on the streets of Louisiana, this resilient girl is quickly learning the good life of living in a home. She absolutely loves being in a home with other dogs! While she is very submissive and learns the preferred play style of the other dogs in the home she is also very good at keeping herself entertained, jumping from one toy to another toy. When she tires of that she loves nothing more than jumping up to cuddle next to her person.
Gigi does know "sit" and "no", but we still need to work on other tricks and commands. She loves treats and meal time, so training should be fairly easy to do. She has not met cats or kids in my presence but her previous foster said she was good with bigger kids and little unsure with younger kids, probably because of their more sudden movements.
Gigi is a bit shocked with this Wisconsin winter, after living in Louisiana, so would love nothing more than finding a warm forever home, with people who would help her build her confidence and teach her how to become an even better dog than she already is. Do you have space in your chair, or on your couch for this sweet girl to cuddle into you on these cold winter days?
