Faylene is a 4 year old hound mix that looks like a purebred blue tick coonhound. She came up from our rescue partner in Alabama and they said she was brought into rescue to find her forever home because a hunter said she wouldn’t chase deer. Faylene is fostered with Baxter (hound mix) and was fostered with him down in Alabama. Most of the time at home they are attached to each other and are always wrestling or touching each other while sleeping. When Faylene is done wrestling for the day she’ll lay down on the couch and snore away.

Energy Level:
She has a medium to medium low energy level and currently enjoys a daily 1.3 mile walk either on her own or with her foster brother. When walked on her own she has good leash manners but does pull a bit when her hound nose leads her to something that smells good which is quite often. She’ll easily move on with encouragement and treats. When walked with her foster brother they are pretty good at going in the same direction but hound noses have them stop to smell once in awhile and sometimes in the opposite directions.

Training:
Faylene is food motivated and she knows the commands: sit, down, and come. We will start working on leave it and other commands. She also loves peanut butter kongs/mats, snuffle mats, and bully sticks. She is not an aggressive chewer and treats last her quite a bit of time (9-12” bully sticks last 1-2 hours!). She’s not huge on dog toys but will carry them around to play with her foster brother. They have not destroyed a single toy! She is just starting to chew on chew toys but loses interest fast.

Crate Training:
Faylene is crate trained and is quiet in her crate while I’m away at work during the day (she is crated right next to Baxter). When she hears the garage door open from me getting home from work she does bark in her deep hound voice. I do let her free roam when I’m out on a walk with her foster brother and she doesn’t get into trouble (I watch her on my cameras). At night she can either sleep in her crate or your bed. She’s a great cuddler and doesn’t move much at night unless you get up, then she’ll steal your warm spot! She turns into a sleep loving hound and it’s sometimes hard to get her to get up in the morning or late evenings.

Dogs:
As for dogs, Faylene loves her foster brother and will play with him all day. When we see other dogs out on a walk she just wants to stop and stare. Once in a while she will let out hound bark. When she sees dogs or neighbors through the backyard fence she can bark a lot but can be re-directed with a high value treat like fresh pet or her dog food. She will sit and quiet right down when you stick treats on her nose. Sometimes I’ll toss the treats on the ground to make her search for them and that typically does the trick.

Cats:
At her foster home there are two young cats. She will go up and sniff them but once the cats swat at her she makes sure to take a wide circle and go around them. She does not chase them at all.

Kids:
She has not met kids in my presence but she is a happy dog and loves every adult person she meets. Faylene has a tendency to treat me, her foster Mom, lovingly like a dog and play bite my hands, chin, face, and hair bun. For this reason, I would suggest no young kids in the home but older kids that are dog savvy would be ok.

Potty Training:
Faylene is in training. We are working on house training with her and her brother so she goes out often.

Car Rides:
Faylene loves car rides. She needs a hand up into my mini SUV backseat and likes to move around a lot in the car and get into your face. A dog hammock or other method to block her would be good. She just wants to sit on your lap and lick your face which can be tricky while driving.

Faylene is an amazing dog and anyone would be privileged to have her in your life. She stole my heart the day I brought her home. I would have kept her and her foster brother Baxter because they are perfect together but for me that would mean I would reduce the number of fosters I take in and there are so many dogs to save. If you are looking for 2 amazing dogs instead of 1 please check out Baxter (hound mix) too.
