Delta is a 1-year-old lab mix that has a lot of puppy left in her. She was rescued from a shelter in Arkansas and moved into a foster home in mid-October. She is a classic shadow/velcro dog and wants to be where her humans are. She loves a good snuggle when she’s tired.
Delta has a medium-high energy level and would need a walking/running/hiking partner or another dog to play with in the home or other forms of dog playdates. She has good leash manners and does not pull but tends to stop and sniff a lot along the way. She can easily walk 3-5 miles and still have the energy to play for a bit after. If she doesn’t get her exercise she can become vocal telling you to get her out and move.
Delta is very smart and is easy to train. She knows: sit, down, come, and give. We are working on more consistently doing: stay, wait, heel, ok, off, quiet, shake, leave it, and turn around. She redirects very easily for treats and/or a toy. She loves chew toys (calming for dogs; extreme level chewer) and loves tearing apart stuffed toys to destroy those evil squeakers. She also loves peanut butter Kongs/mats, snuffle mats, enrichment puzzles, and stuffed animal toys with squeakers.
Delta is crate trained and will take less than 5 minutes to settle down with a little whining/barking. If she’s tired at night whining has been down to 15 seconds and she’s asleep. If she hasn’t gotten her exercise she can be a little more vocal. We are starting to free roam for small amounts of time. So far it’s going well and she just lays on the couch.
If dogs are barking at her while on a walk Delta may get shy and tuck her tail but with encouragement, she’s gaining confidence. If she greets another dog she will start playing after a minute or so of knowing it’s ok. We haven’t met a dog that she doesn’t like. If you don’t want her to meet a dog she will also happily walk by them at a heel.
At Delta’s foster home, there are two cats. She tries to get the cats to play by chasing them, play bowing and hopping around. She will bark at them out of excitement. She can be easily re-directed to a toy/treat or by giving her a time out. She does not chase to harm them and when she’s been allowed to get close, she will just sniff and nudge them to try and get them to play. If she’s tired she will just look at them and watch what they are doing.
Delta has met older kids on walks and will sit and let them pet her. When she gets excited she can become mouthy (working on it) so older kids who can help correct her would be best.
Delta is potty trained. She does “go potty” and “go poop” on command when she’s not distracted by wildlife or smells.
In a car, Delta will just curl up in a tiny ball in the back seat quietly sit, and look out the back window. She does not rush to get out when the door is open.
Delta truly is the sweetest dog and would make a great addition to an active home.
